SWW are a great time for Star Wars fans. They are usually 4 weekends, starting in May through June (last year they added 2 additional weekends). All the events take place at MGM. This year's last weekend is coming up on Friday June9. We went last year, this year and we're already planning next years trip.
I highly recommend checking out Matt's site all about SWW with current info and info/photos/events from prior years.

...does Disney have them every year?
I believe they started back in 1999 or 2000. One year--2002--the event was virtually non-existent. They only had it for one weekend instead of the usual 4 - 6 and Lucasfilm didn't participate at all due to their own marketing efforts to support the SW film released that year.
The event appears to continue growing in its popularity. Barring an edict from G. Lucas, it seems likely to continue indefinitely.
The third weekend of May is normally the starting point. In past years, exact dates begin to leak out around January. So, you'll have about 4 months' advance notice to plan if you really want to wait for confirmation from Disney before you begin to make your arrangements.
One thing that Stimpy didn't mention is that there is no additional cost to attend. All you need is admission to MGM for the day. The rides and most shows still run as normally scheduled, but you'll find Star Wars-themed events occurring on stages and pavilions scattered throughout the park.
We hit our first one this year and had a good time. I will say there were a LOT of people there. Our main goals were to see the SW character parade and get a few photos with costumed characters. We accomplished both goals. The photos were a little frustrating given an average wait time of about 20 minutes per character and 90+ degree temps. But the entire event added a unique twist to this particular Disney vacation.
