Day 3

Sorry it is taking so long to get these done. This has been a crazy week.

So, Rachel is really looking forward to going to Epcot and since we already went to AK so I could ride Everest, Monday seemed like the perfect day. Since we didn’t go to the grocery store, we now have no food for breakfast. I decided to go down to the Marketplace to see what I could find. I was surprised at the number of items you can get for snacks. Things like big bags of chips, loafs of bread, and boxes of donuts were included. One of our silly WDW traditions is to get the small powdered donuts for breakfast. I was very glad to see them sitting there. I grabbed up a box, used one of my snack credits for it, and was back to the room in no time. After eating, we strolled to Epcot. Epcot is so easy to get to from the BCV. After the rope drop we headed for the land to get our FP for Soarin’ along with everyone else who was in the park. After getting our FP we rode Living with the Land. Rachel really likes gardening so this was right up her alley. I was amazed at some of the things that they are doing. I don’t know why, this is Disney of course. As the ride was concluding, the CM on our boat suggested that if we liked the ride, we may want to take part in the Behind the Seeds tour. Rachel asked if this would be OK since I am not into gardening at all. If I have to be outside, I want to either be at Disney or have a golf club in my hand. I said it would be fine so we signed up. It was only $22 for the two of us. We got a discount, but I don’t remember what for. I love it when a CM asks if you have a Disney Visa, or an AP, or are a DVC member. To me, it is fun to answer, “which card would you like?” Anyway, after another great ride on Soarin’ we began our tour. Our guide was Yong who is in charge of all of the greenhouses at WDW. He talked about how they are trying to handle pests with other insects and things about how they are growing large amounts of food in small spaces. The most amazing thing was that last year, they had one (yes, just one) tomato plant that yielded over 32,000 tomatoes. I wouldn’t have believed it if he hadn’t showed us the pics. It was incredible. He said that plant took up almost an entire side of the greenhouse. Here are a couple of my favorite pics from the tour. One is of course of my bride. She got to release lady-bugs into the greenhouse. The other is of the Mickey Shaped Pumpkins that they grow.

After our tour, we decided to head to the World Showcase. We started in Mexico and got a bite at the Cantina. Their food here is better than the food in the sit-down place, but that if for another day. We took our time going through each country. We watched the movie in China and enjoyed the drummers in Japan. It was about this time that we decided that we needed a nap. After our nap, we headed back to Epcot for our dinner at Teppanyaki. On the way over, I heard the melodic tones of Off Kilter. So we went and caught most of the show. I was glad because that day was Jamie’s last performance before a few days off. They were great as always. After that we walked over to Japan. We were seated very quickly and thankfully with some pleasant people. After a wonderful dinner, we did some shopping and found a spot for Illuminations. Rachel was snapping pictures and tried to catch me while I wasn’t looking, but I fooled her.

Illuminations is a good show, but it just is not the same as Wishes for us. We watched the show from an area close to the IG, so we were back in our room in no time. It was another great day.

We've thought about doing the Behind the Seeds tour. Glad to know you enjoyed it. Where did you sign up? In the Land I assume?

Yes, we signed up at the desk just to the left of the Soarin' entrance.

Okay, I was going to tell you until I saw the second pic that your wife was perhaps SLIGHTLY more photogenic, but now I see good looks just come standard in your family.

Hey, we're planning to do that tour in the fall as I am also a crazy gardener person - do you think kids could make it through this? My older daughter will like it, and my dh would like to not have to miss it. We know that the younger two won't think much of it, but they can pay attention pretty well to most things as long as there's something to look at. What do you think? They're 5 and turning 2 on that trip. And how many were in your tour, out of curiosity?

Really enjoying your TRs, DG!

Do you have to take the tour to see Mickey Pumpkin, or can you see it from the ride?

32,000 tomatoes from one plant...mind boggling; I need about 90 (one a day) from a tomato plant...should I buy it from Disney?????

CB-That Mickey pumpkin photo was taken from the ride. On the tour you can see them in various stages though.

jnrrt-There were about 12 or so in our group. Our guide said that they let the guests on the tour feed the baby alligators if the gators are big enough. You may check with the desk to see if you would be able to do that. I would think that would be enough to keep the kids interested since the fish farm was about half-way through the tour. There is plenty to look at. Also, it was neat to have the boats from the ride coming through and people waving at you like you were part of the show.

Nice to put a face with a name :) I was thinking about taking my family on the tour as that is one of the ones that all ages can go on.

Looks interesting, I think I will give it a try!

DH says every trip he wants to do that tour and we never get around to it.
How long does it last?

Well, we can certainly spare an hour!!

DH is going to try and grow some plants this summer using their methods.

I said, could we plant one tomato plant the conventional way just to make sure?!!

Great report and pics, DG! In July 2005, DH and I saw the famous tomato plant! We took the Land ride and the plant was right in the middle of producing those many thousands of tomatoes. It was awesome! :clappingh They had it growing up and out and as big as a tree and it did take up a huge area. I assumed they would have another going this year; wonder why not:huh:

Thanks DG! I'm going to take everyone. I know they can do an hour, and if we luck out and feed alligators, that'll certainly spice up the school report my dd will have to do on what she did on her trip!

You guys look great - but get a tourist to take one of the two of you together!!!!
That tour sounds too neat - I don't think I could get my kids to go for it though - one of those things that will just have to wait.....
