Objective:

Work out 3 times per week for at least 30 minutes each time. Do this each week and stay on the island. If not, you become an island cm. The main point of this is to get you in the habit of working out. Feeling accountable to the rest of the group is a great motivation.

Weeks:

Weeks start on Sunday and run through Saturday. This challenge starts on Sunday April 30.

Challenge:

Each week will will have a different challenge. If you incorporate this challenge and 3 work outs into your week, you will receive one immunity work out. This can be added to a bad week to help you meet your total of 3. (i.e., 1 3-work out week and challenge = 1 work out) Challenges will typically take less than 10 minutes to complete.

What Counts as Exercise?

Walking, running, jogging, wogging, dancing, moving, painting, cleaning, intense gardening... Anything that works your body!

Just because it's productive doesn't mean it's not exercise!

Immunity
Injuries and illness are automatically immunity for the week. I do not want to encourage working out on a part that's already injured or wearing yourself down additionally when you are sick.

Getting Back on the Island:
If you are a cm and want to get back on the island, you must do 4 workouts in one week, plus the challenge. This will reinstate you the following week.

Weekly Tracking:

:donald: = 1 work out
:bouncingm = 2 work outs
:bouncegoo = 3 work outs
:mickeybar = 3 work outs plus challenge
:wizard: = Island Reinstatement (4 workouts plus challenge)

Count me in,Carrie!!:woohoo:
It's time for me to get re-focused on this again!
I have been working out every day again for the past 2 weeks. I went to my montly weigh-in again at Weight Watchers last night. I am up 1 pound, I don't mind admitting that, since I quit smoking. I did a lot of working out this week to get me to that only 1 pound gain...lol
My goal has always been to be able to wear a bikini even for 1 day. I am determined to fit into one for my romantic trip in Oct. I have been on the ab machine approx 30 min for the past 2 weeks.
I am so in!!!!
Who else is joining us, gang?:howudoin:

I'm in! No real weight loss goal, though I wouldn't mind dropping up to five pounds for bikini season. I mostly just like feeling healthy, and I can really tell a difference in the way my body (especially my abs) looks and feels when I work out regularly.

I guess that's why abs are my favorite thing to work... I can actually *see* a difference, unlike anywhere else on my body. I'm tall and tend to look lanky instead of muscular... maybe I don't eat enough protein, but I don't really build much muscle.

Hi All,

Personal trained for an hour today. Also did the treadmill today. I forgot to post yesterday, (all the kids were home) I walked for an hour yesterday morning.

DD has a paper route, so we race around seeing how fast she can get her houses delivered to. Not sure this counts, but I'm exercising at 4am, so I'm gonna take a little bit of credit.

30 minutes of run/walk (2.2 mi)
10 minutes elliptical

Yesterday:

For the challenge, I'm doing exercises involving my back muscles.

You beat me to it, Kerry  I thought I would be the only one doing back strengthening exercise!! I am doing upper back which I did this am.

35 minute run today!

I am working on my hips...not so much strengthening as stretching. Trying to spend time each day doing that since they get sore!

withdisneyspirit
05-05-2006, 12:47 AM
Lisa, do you have any good suggestions for back exercises? Specifically without equipment, just in your own home?

The two main upper back exercises I did this morning were done with 5lb weights in each hand, although if you don't have weights, you could use larger size canned goods. Be sure you can hold them securely of course!

The first one, you slightly bend your knees, hold the weights in front of you (arms down, thumbs right next to each other, then keeping the weights touching bend your arms up until the weights are up to your collarbone or chest and your arms make a wide V, then go back to starting position. Then, do two or three sets of 8-12 reps.

The second exercise, you sit on a chair, knees with a ninety degree angle, bend over with a weight in each hand resting close to each other under your legs. Then lift your arms straight out away from your body so that your arms are at shoulder level. Then go back to starting position and repeat 2-3 sets with 8-12 reps.

If you want to work out your middle and lower back as well as your core, you can do Supermans. I lay on the floor on a yoga mat on my stomach. I lift my legs up off the mat and my arms, shoulders and head off the mat as well. Then you hold the pose for 10-30 seconds and do it 2-10 times depending on your level of fitness. If you suffer low back pain, you can lift just your feet, or lift both feet and head plus shoulders but leave your arms by your side instead of doing the "Superwoman" move :woohoo: Hope this helps. If I make sense to you, I'll add some more in the next couple of days:beaniepro

athenna

Well, I did my 30 minutes of ab crunches last night. This was after spending 2 and 1/2 hours on the phone w/Verizon and my internet still isn't exactly right, and after my father's dr's appointment were we didn't get very good news. So I was happy I was able to get my workout in, but surprised I had the energy!

pouncingpluto
05-05-2006, 12:49 PM
Lisa, thanks for the ideas! I'll definitely give the upper back ones a try. I already do Supermans and a couple other things for the lower and mid-back, but nothing really for the upper back.

One thing I saw on some exercise show I happened to flip past a couple months ago is: On your hands and knees, lift up your left arm and your right leg, straight in front of and behind you. Hold, then switch.

I also do a lot of ballet barre-type exercises. I can feel my butt and lower back in arabasques and other rear leg lifts.

Gymnasts do a really good back exercise where they drape themselves over the vaulting table so that their upper bodies are down toward the floor, with someone holding their legs, and lift up to horizontal. I used to do that on our ottoman, but I ruined it. Too much pressure of my knees digging in... it split the seam. So occasionally I do it off the end of our bed instead.

withdisneyspirit
05-05-2006, 02:00 PM
Hi Kerry! I'm really sore from the two I described to you yesterday:jumpingbe Thanks for mentioning the one you saw on the exercise show. I've seen it somewhere too but forgot all about it!

There is one more upper back exercise that Denise Austin mentioned as her favorite for upper back. She credits it for the compliments she receives in outfits that show off her upper back.

There are two ways to do it: Bend left leg forward and put your left hand on your upper thigh. Your right leg should be straight with your knee soft (not locked) or slightly bent in the variation to follow. With a weight in your right hand and your arm perpendicular to the floor, bend your arm straight up to your ribcage then return to start. You should feel your shoulder blades getting work from it. Do 8-12 reps, 2-4 sets and reverse. I do one set left, then right, then left so there really is no rest period. A variation is to rest your hand on a chair instead of your thigh. I found the variation a little more stable. These are called upright one-arm rows :howudoin:

withdisneyspirit

I did 45 minutes this morning :D 15 minutes doing the exercise I just described to Kerry and also Supermans and slow pushups which I also think work the upper back and then I did big hills on my tread for 30 minutes!

Well, I have been veggin' on the sofa all day today since my surgery; it feels weird to just lie around :bored: I really never have time to do that!!!

I seem to have come through the surgery with flying colors. I learned to use crutches for the first time and I have physical therapy at 9 am tomorrow. I don't guess that counts as a workout?:innocent:

Thanks for the good wishes y'all!

Lisa, hang in there girl. I hope everything was fixed that was broken. I am b etting that physical therapy will be tougher than you may be expecting, so I bet it can count as a workout. Just don't suck down too many bon bons when you are on that sofa.

I had My kind of workout tonight. Hubby and I went to the mall to walk tonight. I had a return to make at J. Jill and by the time I got done returning and making new purchases, hubby had done his three miles and it was time to go. :teleport: So no Survivor Island credit for me for tonight, but I sure had fun.

I want to thank y'all for being here the last few months! I am ahead of schedule already according to my physical therapist and I really believe it is due to my physical fitness. I impressed them because they knew about the fibromyalgia and lupus and they were prepared to take me real slow but the opposite happened. Of course, now I am pretty sore. I counted about forty minutes of workout time:blueflowe I learned a very effective leg lift; it will flat burn your quads!!!!!

When we were at the cardiologist this morning, we had some discussion about workouts, etc.

The Dr. said that when you get to our age, meaning hubby and I (50 and 56) that you should definitely have one day in the week that you do not workout. Carrie, you are the one that had suggested that, too, if I remember correctly. He said that you need to give your muscles and joints a day to recover. That is if you are doing up to a moderate workout. Surves kind of says pretty much the same thing.

If you are working out "intensely", say for a marathon, he said you should take two days off during the week.

He also said to lose pounds, you need a longer, sustained workout. For instance, instead of making sure he walks for 3 miles at a really fast pace, slow it down a bit and walk at a sustained pace for 45 minutes. Don't count the miles. He said the sustained pace loses fat, but when you kick it up a notch, you lose carbs and protein and other stuff.

And lastly, while hubby was bemoaning the fact that he has been on a plateau for several weeks now as far as weight loss, the Dr. said, you pat yourself on the back every day that you are doing the right things, even if you are not losing lbs.

One more thing, the Doc stated, again just like Curves, how imortant your cool-down and stretching is after the workout. He said that not doing your stretching can cause muscles to lock up on you.

I totally agree about taking a day (or more!) off. I'm only 28, but honestly, I can't work out more than four days a week without feeling like my energy levels are being drained. Four days a week (at about an hour a workout) is perfect, I think. I feel healthy and proud of myself, but I'm not stressing my body.

PoohsPal
05-10-2006, 07:24 PM
Yes, RWE, I am the couch potato that preaches days off! ;) Some hjust cannot do that. I cannot go the other way. It is best to try to give your bod a rst, though. For marathon training, we always had one day off. About every other week, we had 2 off. It worked, but those weeks with only 1 day off were tough! I've heard much of what the doc said at Curves too. Not that they're gospel, but it's good to know that others say the same thing.

You and dh should be so proud of your accomplishments!! Woo hoo!

AmyBeth68
05-10-2006, 07:49 PM
Days off are GOOD! I did 6 days in a row of intense exercise and one night my body just ACHED....all night....couldn't sleep :(. It wasn't stiff muscles.....it was just my body screaming at me. So the next day I took a rest day and gave my muscles a chance to heal. Every time we exercise we are breaking down the muscles...they require rest days to build back up. So....enjoy those breaks!!!!

Curves -1 hour this morning. Had the place to myself most of the time, and it was wonderful. And I got weighed and measured, and it was good news. I have lost a total of 20 lbs since I started watching what I am eating and a total of 7.25 inches, actually 7.5, but they say I gained .25 in the bust, but I dont want to count that against the loss since it isn't a gain in a "bad" spot, if you know what I mean. The best part is I lost .5" in my arms, and they said that most people don't lose there. :doublejum

Now I have to go to a college graduation and party afterwards and another party tomorrow. And the party tonight is BBQ and fried chicken. That's gonna be interesting.

Carrie,
Don't think of it as a new toy, think of it as operating under a disability. If I was going to "rub it in", I"d more likely say that, having finished my run, DW and I are sitting here on the beach, watching the waves and the people, enjoying the nicest weather of our trip so far. We each have a cold drink, and a book to read.

About 40 minutes of conditioning and stretching today. I seem to have a mild wrist sprain, so I had to lay off any arm exercises. Actually, it's more than two weeks old now (from falling on it at my first ice skating class), but I didn't really pay attention to it at first, and I noticed during my WDW trip that it was getting worse instead of healing. So now I'm trying to be really good and wear a brace all the time.

Kerry - So sorry about your wrist!!!!

Athenna - Lisa is absolutely right. If you don't take enough water in, your body hangs on to every spare drop in case you decide no tto water again fo ra while. ;) This will cause you to fgain weight. Then there's the monthly flux on top of that. It's one of my biggest downfalls. I get depressed when I gain and I think I shouldn't and then eat poorly. Don't let it get you down!!! :grouphug:

RWE - Have a great trip! I'm soo jealous!

Well, I had my bottel of water after dinner Monday night to get the rest in. I won't tell you how badly I cursed all of you on my way to the bathroom at 1 am! ;) ;) ;)

Thanks! I'm not wearing my wrist brace today... it feels mostly ok. I'm still going to lay off the dumbbells at least until the weekend, and if I do try them, I'll wear the brace. And I'll definitely wear the brace every time I get on the ice! I can't make it through a lesson or practice session without falling at least once.

Our teacher taught us not to fall forward and catch ourselves, but to fall on our butts instead. But as someone who has dislocated her tailbone in a rollerblading fall (and that kind of injury takes *forever* to heal, because doctors can't do anything for it), it's hard to do that.

No, I'm not very coordinated. But I try hard!

As I was setting out on the marathon training I noted that last week was the week I thought it would all go to heck...

Well, it mostly did. I was able to get my long run and one of my short runs in. I missed 1 run and all my cross training days. Yesterday the family did a short walk in the rain. It wasn't really exercise, but it was moving for at least 30 minutes so I think I made the challenge for the week.

The next hurdle will be the week while we're at Disneyland. I have 2 long runs to do, not sure yet how I'll get those in.

Today's run for beginning the new week - 2 hours, 2 minutes. 14 miles running with an additional 1 mile walking scattered throughout.

I just don't see how I'm going to be able to run this 5K I'm doing in late June. I can't seem to run on my run/walks for more than three minutes, and that's *pushing* it.

I think I have exercise-induced asthma. I'm not making excuses... I really wonder... my lung capacity really seems abnormal for a young, fit person. My mother and brother are both severe asthmatics.

Anyway, yesterday was going to be a rest day, but instead I did a 2 mile walk at a relatively relaxed pace.

8 mile run this morning in 82 minutes. I started about 9 am, and it was definately the hottest long run I've ever had. Oh, and this is the longest run I've ever done.

Kerry,
You may be correct about the exercise induced asthma. Our daughter has it. She would come home from basketball practice and tell us that she thought she had asthma, and we'd say, "hogwash, noone in either of our familes has asthma, so there's no way that you could have it." Well, we were wrong. After a while, we took her to her pediatrician, and he advised that exercise induced asthma is not necessarily hereditary. She started off with an aubuterol inhaler which she would use 15 minutes prior to a game or practice, and we noticed the difference immediately. She went through several other meds to "fine tune" her response, but to make a long story short(er), my DD just graduated with a basketball/academic scholarship to an NCAA Div II school. My point is, exercise induced asthma can be controlled so that it is not restrictive. You just need to get the right meds from your doc.

If you try the inhaler, and notice no improvement, then it probably is not EIA. If you're not sure, you've got nothing to lose to check it out.
Good Luck!:blueflowe

You must have been on a roll!!

I had PT today and they taught me a new, very mean exercise for my 'enhanced' knee:scary: I am going to count 70 mins again today.

To do a superman/woman:) , you lie down on your stomach on a yoga mat or the like. If you're able to, you lift your arms out in front of you as though you were flying in the air like Superman:Pokepoke: and then you lift your legs off the ground together. Hold the pose for ten seconds and work up to a longer hold like thirty seconds. do 5-8 reps to start and add more as you are able.

If your back hurts with this stance, do the Superwoman with your arms by your side. You still lift your head and shoulders off the ground and your legs but this way is a bit easier on the back!

To really build core strength, however, you need to build abs and back. You cannot really get rid of low back pain without building both areas! Hope that helps :howudoin:

1 hour 5 minutes running this morning (10K). Felt good to sweat. It'll feel better after I have some :coffee2:

Great job, nono:jumpingbe

I did 1.7 miles on the tread which is great for me and I did about six minutes at a 15 min mile pace which is the fastest I have walked since my surgery:D My total workout including PT and abs was 75 minutes!!

Friday.... an hour at Curves.....

Carrie....thanks for the :dust for the delivery..I got to Curves early and they were at the house when I got home.

I also drank the water quota every day if we are still doing the same challange.

Leaving for HHI tomorrow so the only workouts I will be doing is walking and keeping up with my 19 month old grandson. Hoping the weather will be nice so I can go to the pool and beach. Everyone have a great week.
