Since National is offering free Emerald Club memberships right now, I thought I'd join to see what sort of discounts I can get.
I reserved a car for my May trip quite a while ago, and got just under $100 for the week. I'm definitely not changing that one. However, I'm now looking for something for October. Emerald Club is offering me a better rate than Alamo right now. I tend to check every week or two to see if I can get a better rate than before, and just cancel my old reservation when I make a new one. I was about to book the car through National when I noticed my credit card information at the bottom.
If I book a car for October today through Emerald Club, is my credit card automatically charged? What happens if I cancel and rebook a couple of weeks down the line?

Under $100 for a week from national is phenomenol. I couldn't get anything near that. Congrats.
Your card isn't charged when you book - the information is there because you just get in a car and go. You don't have to present a credit card to check out. They've got everything in their system, so you choose car, prsent your dirvers license at the gate, and off you go. It's worked pretty well for me.
Also, you aren 't confined to Emerald Club rates. You can put in any discount combinations you can find to see what works best. As you long as you book an intermediate through the Emerald Club login, you'll get the Emeral Aisle privileges.

They store your credit card number, DL number and so forth just to expedite the pick-up process. If you rent from a location that has the Emerald Aisle or Emerald Counter (or whatever else they call it), basically you can just pick ANY car from the designated lot/spaces without speaking to anyone, and they complete the rental process as you are driving off the lot.
To cancel a reservation, you just log onto the website and enter your name and confirmation number. The site will pull-up the reservation and you can immediately cancel it.
From my experiences, joining the Emerald Club rarely leads to outstanding automatic discounts. When I log into the website it assigns an Emerald Club Contract ID to my session. However, using one off of MouseSavers.com normally produces much better discounts.
I always viewed Emerald Club as more of a convenience item than a discount club. But if that's changed over time or they are running specials just for Emerald Club members, go for it! :)

I actually got this rate through Alamo for a mid-size SUV. It was a case of checking the rates at just the right moment, plus using the Costco discounts. I haven't been able to come anywhere close to that since.
Thanks for letting me know about Emerald Club.

I agree, great rate at $100 for a week. That is usually what I am able to work out, but not this time.
As stated above, you are never charged until you actually return the car at National.
Emerald Aisle is a wonderful time saver. We love walking over and just picking out the car we want and hopping in driving off. We have always been pleased with the cars available to us on the Emerald Aisle.
Right now my best rate is $137 for a Chevy Equinox for 6 days on the Emerald Reserve. I keep checking but it isn't getting any better. I am happy when I get around $20.00 day.

Your welcome,
Someone asked if I would have a problem mixing a walmart code with a the coupon.
Has anyone had a problem with doing this with an Almo rental?
Thanks Jim.

The American Express contract code for National was giving great rates for this year - for 07 bookings when I just check the same rates are horrible and higher than emerald club standard contract (the amex code is on mousesavers.com)
cheers
