View Full Version : April Survivor - Treasure Island

Based on the results of the poll, we will start a new game each month to get those of us who ran into a bad week, back on the island. By popular request, I am going to try to layout the ground rules a little better this time too! Here we go:
Objective:
Work out 3 times per week for at least 30 minutes each time. Do this each week and stay on the island. If not, you become an island cm. The main point of this is to get you in the habit of working out. Feeling accountable to the rest of the group is a great motivation.
Weeks:
Weeks start on Sunday and run through Saturday. This challenge starts on Sunday April 2.
Challenge:
Each week will will have a different challenge. If you incorporate this challenge and 3 work outs into your week, you will receive one immunity work out. This can be added to a bad week to help you meet your total of 3. (i.e., 1 3-work out week and challenge = 1 work out) Challenges will take less than 10 minutes to complete.
Immunity
Injuries and illness are automatically immunity for the week. I do not want to encourage working out on a part that's already injured or wearing yourself down additionally when you are sick.
Getting Back on the Island:
If you are a cm and want to get back on the island, you must do 4 workouts in one week, plus the challenge. This will reinstate you the following week.
Weekly Tracking:
:donald: = 1 work out
:bouncingm = 2 work outs
:bouncegoo = 3 work outs
:mickeybar = 3 work outs plus challenge
:wizard: = Island Reinstatement (4 workouts plus challenge)

Week 4 Challenge
Challenge of the week is to get in an extra work out. This is what would eb needed to get us CMs back on the island. Tought it'd be nice to get there in theory, even though we'll start over next week.

Question though, I will become a Island CM this week (last week of March). Do I need to do 5 workouts to get back on treasure island, or does it start from scratch? Just let me know what I need to do to play next month!!

Grrr.... I don't want to answer this, because I really wanted you to make it for March. :p
We are absoluteley starting fresh. So, we're all on the island starting April 2.
I'm with ya! Not that I understand a darn thing past what you wrote under weeks. But, you know that's just me, and I'll go back and :magnify: again later...and I'll try to concentrate!!! :duck:

I'll participate.
2 questions:
Do you post on this thread when we workout?
What's an island cm?
PoohsPal
03-29-2006, 03:14 PM
Ginger - Welcome!!! Yes, you will post on this thread when you have worked out. You can check out the Cataway cay thread if you want to see how we did it. Periodically, we will post updates on how everyone's doing. At least a couple times a week.
Island CM is just a title. I didn't want to really "kick" anyone off the island, as it's more about gettign the work outs in. So, you just get tracked as a CM instead. You may be asked to serve virtual drinks, though. ;)

Week 1 Challenge:
For the first week, we'll make it an easy one. Measure yourself.
Largest part of chest
Waist
Hips/largest part of stomach
Thigh
Upper Arm
Pick a spot wher eyou can try to be consistant. So many times we look for our waeight to go down, but we are gaining muscles and losing inches instead. I'd like you to be able to track for yourself how you did. I do not want to know your measurements. Just write them down so that you can compare at the end of the month.

Tape measures are not easy to find these days. I have been needing one for my knitting and not having much success as I didn't want to pay $15.00 for a fancy/cutsie one at the knitting store. Hubby finally found one at K-mart, and it was one of only two that they had in the entire store.
One quick question, do I get a Donald head for my walk at the mall? Just to clarify, it is non-stop walking with my iPod, not shopping and looking walking. If not, no problem, because I will have my Curves workouts, too.
I have to say that I had been really proud of myself for getting away from my sedentary lifestyle and walking and going to Curves, but you gals are putting me to shame. I can tell that I am totally out of my league here

1. If you walk 30 minutes, you walk 30 minutes. I don't care where it is.
2. You are not out of your league!!!! Ireally want this challenge to get poeple moving and keep them moving. Do we have some over achievers here? Yup. If you do your 3 times a week, though you stay on the island.
I did have maximums suggested to me to get around anyone feel ing like they are out of their league. To me, that was almost like discouraging working out more and some people just have to work out daily. Not me. I'm a slacker. Only once have I gone above and beyond what my training schedule dictates.
I think as you go on, you will see that many just stick to their 3 work outs. And that is just fine!!!!!

*Got 50 minutes at the gym today! Yay! Weights, eliptical, and the treadmill....
*did my measurements (:holymoly: ) this evening!
Hey all, last month, I think I might have qualified as a sometimes "overachiver."
To put it in perspective, I don't think I did ONE workout for 2005. I may have walked a half hour or more, but that was because I was too cheap to drive somewhere or pay for public transportation... So, now that I had my "rest year" :upsidedow I'm having a good time getting going again.
Carrie, thanks for the clarification about the challenge...remember I read the rules before coffee and couldn't quite grasp them :hypnotict ...my bad!
Also, thanks for the tape measure tips everyone! We have a lot of colored markers here, and lots of rope, so I'll use that until I get a real tape measure. I want one like Mary Poppins'-- you know, where all of my measurements will come out "Practially Perfect in Every Way."

I'm all measured up, which gives me MORE of an incentive to workout. Per my doctor's request, I try to exercise everyday because I am diabetic. I have been able to keep it under control for the last 1 1/2 by exercising and diet. Though I don't do the mega exercising regime, I've kinda found my nitch. Than being said,

PoohsPal, not to worry. I knew I would get my three workouts in with Curves.
I am very lucky that my Curves is less than a mile from my house. I can leave work (a 20 mile drive), go home, change clothes, get to Curves, workout and be back home by 6:00. If it weren't that easy, I might have never signed up.
I learned last night that my Curves will be closed on Good Friday, a day my office will be closed. I was disappointed in that. Maybe hubby and I will have to get to the mall early on Friday and get the walking out of the way.

Nothing more frustrating than to be doing the "right things" and then you end up gaining weight. It is hard to stay motivated when that happens. You keep up the good work and you wil see a smile on that Drs. face when you visit him next.

Well, I won't get my three times in this week. I got to Curves on Monday, got sick on Tuesday and stayed home from work on Wed.. I am at work today but only because I really don't want to use another sick day. I am hoping that I can get to Curves tomorrow. I would have gone to Curves yesterday if I wasn't coughing so much. With all the coughing, my stomach muscles are sure getting a workout.
I sure hope you feel better, mickeydvcfan! Man, whatever is going around sure is nasty!
Got a phone call from the doctor today. Though I gained the 6 pounds, all my numbers were still very good. She was very happy---me too! No cholestrol meds, no diabetes meds. I just need to keep motivated, keep moving, and keep eating the right foods in proper proportions.
So, today I did 45 minutes AM yoga and then hubby and I just finished our 30 minute walk.
60 min. leisurely bike ride, with the 25lb. er strapped on the back....

OK, I updated you. Typically, I only count one work out per day, no matter how muuch you do, which is why my number differs a bit. DOn't know my reasons, but it's what I've done fo reveryone to date, so I'm staying consistent. If people want to see it differently, please let me know and I'll start doing it that way next week.
Nono - no problem with not doing the challenge. If you're happy with where you are, that's awesome!!!! :dancingba
Carrie,
Gotcha on the counting: it's 5 days. (Rules aren't my stong point, aaaayyyyyiiiahhh!)
As for "happy" where I'm at, I'd say I'm more at the "I don't care where I'm at" stage...Worry about "How big is my bottom?"etc. seems kinda pointless to me anymore 'cause guess what -- No one will EVER EVER have to do this :magnify: to see it. Whether I'm toned or not, overweight or not, I have an ample caboose. (thank goodness there's no smiley for that one!) Don't misunderstand me -- if I can fit into more of my clothes as the months go on, I'll be pleased as can be! I'm just trying to be super-grateful for what I've been given, even if I feel it is less than perfect. Hope that makes sense. :goodvibes

Carrie....I'm glad you had us do the measurements as I hate the scale. But this way I can track my progress based on how I've toned as opposed to what the scale reads. Especially since my scale hasn't been giving me the numbers I wanted LOL! I think we need a scale smashing smiling!
OK.....today I ran for 3 miles in 30:20 plus did 30 minutes of yoga and a brief ab workout. I'm finally feeling better and ready to continue exercising! :dancingba

I actually do measurements the first of every month, so I was one day early for the challenge. Since I started in Nov, 2004, I've lost 3 inches from the waist and 4.5 from the hips.
Wed...30 min on the TM at R3/W2
Today...45 min cross-training at the Y...weights, elliptical and bike
Tomorrow (at WDW :lovestruc ) planning for 6 mile long run around BW, Y&BC.

I did my third workout this afternoon. :) 35 minutes on the elliptical and another 35 of stretching and conditioning.
I may or may not do the challenge, depending on whether I can find my tape measure. I really don't think my measurements are going to change much, anyway. Especially since I want to prevent boob loss!
I lost 25 pounds about two years ago, so I'm really just in maintenance mode. I wouldn't mind losing like three pounds for bathing suit season, but I'm already my ideal weight really, in terms of what a doctor would say.
So the exercise is for health and looking toned. And I have to say, I've had back trouble since a car accident eight years ago, and my back pain is *so* much better when I work out regularly.

Hey poohspal! No I don't think I'm at the muscle state yet and I haven't had my time of month for a number of years, so can't use that as an excuse. The 4 pounds are just blubber around the middle. So smaller portions are what's going to do it for me. It's just so darn hard!
Okay, today 20 minuted yoga stretch, 30 minute light weights program and then another 30 minute pm yoga for me today.

Ok for the challange for this week, I've identified that I want to loose the belly fat. So I went out and bought Fish oil, I read in a Womens world magazine that a study was done and it showed that having 2000mg of fish oil before a 45 walk reduced belly fat after 30 days, in 80% of people and after 45 days 90% of the people noticed reduced belly fat. But I have a back up plan, I am also going to tone those ab muscles by adding situps on a ball to my routine. I swa the personal trainer at the gym, working with a women and the PT had her sitting so the ball was underneath her behind more so than in the small of her back. the women told me she definetly felt the difference and that it really helped in her core.
So there it is.

I did over an hour of conditioning and stretching last night. By conditioning, I mean various strength exercises, some with free weights and some borrowed from ballet and gymnastics training. Things like plies, arabasques and scales, and V-ups (a super good ab exercise gymnasts do a lot of... lie flat on the floor, then lift your legs and your upper body up so that you're in a V position... it's something most people have to work up to... I do 10 reps, then hold a hollow position (almost lying, but tighter, with everything off the ground except butt) for 10 seconds, then rest.
Anyway, no elliptical for me yesterday because I wanted to give my knees and ankles a break, especially because I'm planning to run on actual pavement tonight.
For the challenge, I rediscovered an exercise that I can really feel in my butt, much more than squats. :) It's hard to describe. I guess it's you're sort of in crab walk position, but you're trying to hold your torso so it's flat... no bend in the hips. You really have to squeeze your butt to hold this for awhile.

Well, I did get the call for the MRI results; my rheumatologist's office called and said yes, I do have a meniscus tear:worried: They referred me to a couple of orthopedic surgeons. Basically, if I want to be able to have the use of my knee back, I think I am going to have to have this surgically repaired.
I have started asking other docs for their recommendations before I go see an ortho doc about this.

So sorry to hear that, Lisa!
I got in my third workout for the week last night. I ran/walked for 20 minutes (*man* that was hard... I thought it would be easier than it was, since I've been doing the elliptical to get my cardivascular fitness up). Then I did the elliptical for 10 and stretched afterwards.
It was a relatively short workout, but I can feel it more than usual today! It's definitely going to be a rest day.

I must not have reported a workout since I have a Donald, but I did do 40 minutes of cardio on Tuesday.
Yesterday I did 20 minutes on the bike. I don't think that counts since it is only 20 instead of 30.
So I have 2 workouts in :)

Lisa,
What were you doing when you injured your knee? With our DD playing basketball, an ACL type injury has always been a fear of ours (she's the one in the black shirt in the pic below). How long is recovery after the surgery?
Good Luck.

I'm not sure, Denny? I did fall with all my weight on that knee months ago but did not appear to injure it. The pain started after I got my treadmill and started jogging on it.
Supposedly, the tear surgery most times has a relatively short recovery (can walk on it after a few days), unless the surgeon attempts a fix of the tear instead of trimming it. A friend of mine who had the surgery says she feels like new again and she is in her mid-40's like me.
Anyway...I did do a short easy workout of 45 mins - 32 on the bike and 13 doing a nice long stretch of every muscle, especially those thigh muscles:Pokepoke:

I did a relatively light workout yesterday (Saturday), because believe it or not, I am *still* sore from Thursday!
I was on the elliptical for 25 minutes, and then did stretching and abs for about another 20.
I was planning to run outside today, but I'm not sure. My calves and ankles are still pretty sore. So maybe I'll do something light again.
Even though I technically did it once last week, I think the running should count for this week's challenge! :) Because I definitely haven't done it in forever, and I'm trying to run a 5K (and I want to run, not run/walk) in June. So I'm just now starting to train.

No workout yesterday. :( (Well, actually, I did a lot of housework, which is strenuous in its own right!)
Both of my ankles were still really sore from Thursday (I feel like a wuss), and I'm not positive that it's just muscle soreness instead of tendon soreness. Since I've already had one ankle reconstructed (partial ligament tear, partial tendon tear, and a complete tendon tear), I have to be cautious.
We'll see how it goes tonight! I still don't think I'm going to run outside, but maybe elliptical. Then again, I did elliptical on Saturday night, and my ankles felt their worst yesterday. Blah. Maybe just conditioning tonight.
