Hi folks,
Any suggestions on a grocery store that is close by and that is reasonably priced. I had always heard that Publix was the cheapest. I went there twice in July and I thought they were very expensive. In fact, some of the items being sold in the OKW and BC giftshops were just slightly more expensive. Everything was far more expensive than it is at home ... and I live in Massachusetts!!!!!
I went to the Publix on Vineland Rd right near 192. I have since read that this location is more of a tourist trap and has much higher prices than other Publix locations. I do not know if that is true or not. Does anybody have any suggestions?

Thanks!

When we were there, we used Winn Dixie, and I thought it was very reasonable.

I know my way around, but not street names, sorry! You take the main road past Downtown Disney (where all the official entrances are) towards Goodings in the Crossroads Shopping Plaza thingie (am I specific enough for you yet?). Rather than continuing straight into Crossroads, turn left (I THINK this is 535) and go 3 lights. Winn Dixie is on your right. We thought it was convenient and clean. We also got their card which saved some money.

Those directions are correct - if DTD traffic is really bad, go out (was Community Drive) and turn left and at the end of that road turn right - this gets you to FL535 as well at the lights where you turn left and Winn Dixie is on the RH side

There is also a decent Publix out on 192 near Sherbeth Road but that might be a bit of a drive depending on which DVC you stay at

We personally go to Chamberlain's (we eat a fair amount of natural and organic foods) which is up on Sand Lake Road near Dr Phillips (a substantial drive - good 15-20 minutes) up FL535 past the Winn Dixie

We always found Publix very reasonable and of very high quality. We went to a Super Wal-Mart on our last trip and that seemed very good too.

Winn Dixie on 535 fan here too, esp when we are at OKW.

Tip, if you forget your card your home phone number works!!!

Out of curiosity, where are the Publix and Super WalMarts? I just wonder if they'd be more convenient to some of the other resorts?

I like Publix. We went to Wal-Mart once.....never again...just too crowded.

Don't know where the Walmarts are (we do not patronize that establishment)

I'm a huge Publix fan. The store by the Premium Outlets is relatively new, sparkling clean, and usually empty. Plus it's next to a Walgreen's and near a Starbucks - what more could I want??!!!

That's the one I usually go to bavaria.

We've done the Super WalMArt (ugh. Too dang busy, even at crack o' dawn! I have heard reports that they call themselves the busiest Wal-Mart in America... that day, I'd believe it, and it wasn't even "prime time!") We've also done the Publix (and found it fairly reasonable, by our grocery standards.) I have also done SuperTarget... mainly because I had bought $200 worth of Target gift cards at a 20% savings off Hotwire at the time. Well, yes, we saved the moolah, but it was a pain in the biscuits driving there, and the selection wasn't that great. They did have a Starbucks right inside though - that was nice! :) But as a rule - nah -- I didn't think it was worth the trip.

For our next WDW visist I am SERIOUSLY thinking of the wegoshop or similar grocery delivery service. Having the time I spend in a storeto instead lay around a pool (or even just to unpack!) would be worth it to me!

We used the Super Wal Mart it was ok and Publix seems to be getting more expensive so last trip we tried the new Winn Dixie and it was fairly good for selection and price and it isn't that far from the DTD entrance to Disney.

can anyone recount an experience with WeGoShop? we've placed an order for an upcoming SSR, but apart from an email saying we should call to arrange times, we've heard nothing back from them. and i've called three times leaving a message. nice idea, but don't know if i can rely upon them.

I don't have any first-hand experience, but after reading nothing but glowing reviews for as long as I can remember, and suddenly in the last 48 hours I've seen two scathing reports about their poor service. In both cases, Wegoshop simply refused to meet their commitment citing a "family emergency." No groceries were delivered and no other alternatives provided. Communication was also lacking, with the guest having to call to find out the status.

It is a family run business. While I am sympathetic to legitimate family issues, it seems they could have gone to greater lengths to communicate with the guest--maybe even have a contingency plan in place.

Given your lack of response from them, I would personally expect the worst.

If money isn't a big issue, you could either try to buy from the resort (which granted has a limited selection), or you could take a cab to a nearby store.

A most cost-effective option might be to rent a car for just one day to do your running. The Car Care Center at WDW has a rental desk for Alamo and National. If you call the CCC, they will pick you up from your resort and take you to the rental desk to get your car. In addition to grocery shopping, there is a Disney outlet store very close to Publix (about 10 min away from Downtown Disney) that sell legitimate Disney apparel and souvenirs at closeout prices. Most of their items have the original WDW price tags, and are marked down 50%. I usually pick-up a golf / polo shirt each trip for about $26-28--down from the normal price of $50-60.

Assuming that you're planning to use DME for your transportation, you could consider foregoing DME at your arrival and either take a limo service (which should do a grocery stop) or rent a car at MCO and schedule the return for the Car Care Center.

All of these options will take some additional time from your vacation (except ordering from the resort), but I think you're justified to be worried about the situation with Wegoshop at this point.

i know there are places on the Web having copies of menus from WDW restaurants, and a grocery store like Publix is a grocery store. but does anyone know of any place that lists what the grocery stores or grocery-like stores on property have in terms of items as specific as the DVC grocery order list is?

after the aborted run at WeGoShop, we've decided that the win from taking the Disney Magical Express instead of a limo outweighs any differential savings between prices at grocery stores and shopping through Disney. only problem is, selected through the grocery order is kinda bad.

hence, trying to figure out if there are places we can go to supplement stuff we get from a Disney grocery order.

i've learned there's a place at SSR, although its selection has been reported to be meager. there is a copy of the BWV grocery ("General Store") at CBR apparently, which can be reached from SSR by bus. but i don't even remember the General Store's offerings, apart from milk and a bunch of Disneyana stuff.

so, anyone know of such on the Web? can anyone going down to WDW soon make a list of these things for the rest of us, posting it here? might save time to just note what they have that the grocery order forms don't, e.g., wine.

thanks.

There is actually a full list on the DVC members-only website at www.dvcmember.com.

When you log in, follow this path:

Vacation Planning / Vacation Planning Tools / Grocery Order

The lists are in Adobe Acrobat format, so make sure you have the free reader installed. You can print off the list and even fax it in advance.

The service charge is only $5, but be prepared for a little sticker shock in the item prices. You also may not find everything you are looking for.

Hope that helps.
