View Full Version : Access Troubles?

Well the sunspot activity over NJ must have abated or something.

All last week, I could not access the boards. NO PM, No posting, no nothing.

I would get 404 errors, and even more frequently Server Busy errors. It seems to have cleared, but I'm curious, did anyone else have any bazarro events here last week?

-Tony (No I'm not paranoid, really!)

It was about 2 weeks ago here that I was getting constant "server too busy" messages and I would have to submit messages time and time again (sometimes losing them) to get them to post.

Not sure what cleared up (Poohspal suggested that godaddy might be having troubles and that probably is accurate). Maybe they are redoing things a section of the country at a time???

Do you have negative techno karma? :computers

The only problem I've consistently seen is that "The Wave" smiley NEVER works for me.

Aside from that, I don't recall ever getting board timeouts or access problems--even while viewing over dial-up for most of the last week.

Hi, Tony! Welcome back. No problems here. The boards have been slow every now and then, but okay otherwise.

I will type this as fast as i can as i have found that i am on a time limit to post. this is very aggravating. If i take my time to reply to any post i get booted off, and have to sign on again. Why? this has happened several times to me

Like everyone except the mods, you're a "registered user." I don't know why this would have happened. It sounds like it could be a server time-out issue on your end. :computers

The only setting we have here is a floodcheck, which generally prevents people from posting more than one message every 30-60 seconds (to prevent spam/denial of service) -- but that's the opposite of your problem.

Try clearing your cookies and cache, then sign in again and see if that helps. Otherwise, I don't know what to tell you. :veryconfu

This has happened to me a few times when I have a long reply and I am a slow typer to boot. :) I will type a reply, hit preview and find that I am logged out. I just sign back in and go back a few pages. My reply is there AND I am logged back in. Then I just preview and hit submit-

Yup happened for me most of last week and earlier this week.

Since Wednesday seems to working as usual, thankfully.

Not a cache / cookies issue, since I tend to clear those almost daily.

The only problem I've had is a couple of times I've written a reply, but when I post it, it's only half there. No biggie - I can edit and fix it.

I wrote and lost a huge reply in the SSR forum. I got the you are not logged in message, and I was. Huge wasted effort on my part trying to find my reply to be able to post it. if this message doesn't go thru due to not being logged on, I am out of here. Love the forums but it's a hassle to just simply reply.

Sorry, but I honestly don't know what the problem is. I increased the server/cookie time-out on our end to 25 minutes instead of the normal 15, which should help even the slowest typists. We haven't recorded any errors in our logs, so I don't know what to tell you.

We did a bit more searching, and you also may be encountering a problem if you are not checking the "remember me" setting when you log in.

If you exceeded the server cookie limit (which previously was 15 minutes) without having checked that setting, when you subsequently tried to post (at 16 minutes, say), it would drop your ID cookie and presume you were a guest.

If, on the other hand, you had checked "remember me," it would have attempted to drop your ID cookie but run into the "remember me" setting, and issued you a new ID cookie instead of presuming you were a guest.

That makes a lot of sense, Kim.

I believe there are also software programs that will monitor your system and delete cookies as they are created. If you have some sort of an anti-virus / anti-malware / firewall program that would do this, even checking the "remember me" setting won't fix the problem. If you're running protection software like that, you might want to see if it has any sort of whitelist option to which you could add this site.

Another suggestion that I learned from experiences elsewhere: before you click that "submit" button, highlight all of the text that you typed and then click EDIT / COPY. That will copy your entire post to your computer's clipboard. If you should get any sort of error while posting, you can then log back in and PASTE your reply into a new window.

Thanks, I am now using the remember me button. I love reading the posts on here, and it gets unnerving when I get knocked off when replying. Hope this works, as I am really not that slow typing, I mean it doesn't take me 15 minutes to reply.
