while most here own a piece of the magic through DVC, i'm curious how many own a piece through DIS.

i'm happy with my investment, but i have to admit that there is a rather strong emotional component to it that is absent from other stocks in the portfolio. so i thought i'd try a poll:

I sought DIS out (purchased through their own website) for emotional reasons, but only bought after doing research and seeing that most analysts gave them a strong buy.

Ever since i've bought, they've outperformed analysts expectations, though I think its more in the "hold" category now. Now, was DIS the best stock to buy? Had I put the same $$$ into Costco or Target, I would have done better. Is DIS the best stock to buy for media holdings? Probably. However, I do worry about the future - probably next fiscal year more than this one, because of potential travel downturns.

i have COST too, and yeah it has done relatively better.

re: the travel, apparently what sucks for us is great for international travel; last quarter saw a gain, and hopefully that will continue (the gains that is; i would like for "us" (ugly ethnocentric american that i am) to do a little better).

as of right now, every vote in the poll has been "emotional". in a way it's reassuring, since it supports the strength of brand, wide moat, etc.

They are seeing an influx of international travel I know Canadians that wouldn't normally go are now going in larger numbers due to the stronger CDN dollar etc. We also own a small ammt of DIS stock for each of our kids it wasn't for the performance we have others that way outperform it but for the emotional nostalgic ties to Disney.

My sister purchased Disney stock for me as a gift. I keep intending to purchase DLRP stock at the bargain basement price because it still offers a number of shareholder discounts, but have never actually gotten around to make the purchase.

As to 'international' visits rising? Canada and the UK - yes. Rest of the world - no. There isn't a lot of interest in visiting Disney outside of the UK in Europe. Australians and NZers consider DL or perhaps WDW as part of their longer American pilgrimages.

I have seen a marked increase in Europeans in NYC over the last six months, however. And LH is adding routes to desirable destinations in North America for Germans (newest were SEA and YYC, both strong leisure markets for Germans)

I'm likely to sell soon, but I did think of saving maybe $100 in stock and getting the electronic record converted to a certificate to frame. It would look cool.
