Can anyone confirm a rumor regarding the Osbourne Lights being delayed this year by a couple of weeks?
Taking my DM to go to WDW from 11/23 - 11/27 to view the Christmas decorations at WDW for the first time and are concerned that we may miss seeing them.
TIA

I hope it's not true. As far as I'm concerned that's the best part of WDW at Christmas.

From the Disney World site:
"Presented by SYLVANIA, stroll down New York Street at Disney's Hollywood Studios™ as the streetlights fade and snowflakes begin to fall. Suddenly you're dazzled by millions of lights, dancing in synchronized splendor to a symphony for the senses with twirling carousels, heavenly angels — even Santa and his reindeer — amidst electrifying holiday music! This enchanting spectacle is a Walt Disney World® tradition that makes holiday dreams come true!
Dates:
November 28, 2008 - January 4, 2009
Location: Disney's Hollywood Studios™"
I'm bummed too - thought we might hit them if we went at the same time that they started last year. Bum!!!

Last year it ran from November 12 thru January 6.
So it looks as if they shorten the show on both ends this year.

That really stinks, we're going the 9th thru the 14th and was really hoping to see them again. We're taking people that have never been that time of year....

Although, wouldn't you know it would be delayed until the day after Thanksgiving this year.
Keeping my fingers crossed that we may be able to view some of the lights as they are testing them before we leave on Thanksgiving.
Oh well, we will need to plan another trip to WDW next year in December.

Sorry you're going to miss the official opening. I don't know if they do any test runs for the public to see beforehand.
:welcome: to MouseOwners, anyway. Hopefully we'll be the bearers of better news in the future!

Jan 6 was the first Sunday in January last year. I think that's the traditional end date for all of Disney's Christmas decorations. Kinda sad regarding this years dates, actually, since many cultures celebrate Christmas on 1/6.
As for the late start, I think they put them up earlier the last two years because of construction affecting their storage buildings. Still, I'm surprised they don't run them at least beginning the Wednesday of Thanksgiving week. I guess they figure most Thanksgiving guests make it through Friday or Saturday.

Farscape,
Once again welcome to the forum. I'm glad you decided to take the advice to join us! I take it that your mom enjoyed the last trip to WDW since it seems you are going again. I think last time we saw you at DB... you had not made that trip yet. Say hi to your family for Debbie and I... and now maybe we will bump into you at WDW in addition to the coast! :)

I know families that have planned their trips around this. I hope all the other decorations are going to be up. This is sad. I hope Disney is listening.

I always thought it strange when Disney started them well before the rest of the holiday stuff. Except for the MVMCP, everything in the parks begins the Friday after Thanksgiving, so it makes sense (to me) for Osborne Lights to be on that same schedule. It was nice being able to get that out of the way before Friday night if you're only up there for the holiday weekend, though. I imagine they'll save a bundle on electricity not having to turn the lights on 1-2 weeks early, though! Down here in FL we've been advised starting in August our electricity rates will most likely go up 16% for residential customers and 19% for commercial. That's a big increase!

I know it's frustrating for those who were hoping the lights would be up earlier, but the least couple of years were the exception rather than the rule.
If you are going to WDW for a specific event or attraction, it's always wise to wait until those dates have been announced before confirming a booking.

We make the trek to WDW every year at Thanksgiving (that is, assuming we can get DVC space this year -- it is all booked already!), and it used to be traditional that they decorations would start going up thanksgiving week. As others have said, it has only been the last couple of years that they started putting everything up earlier.
Personally, I prefer the magic of going into the park on Wednesday and seeing no decorations, and coming back on Thursday to a park that is fully decorated. Seeing all of the parks change over four days is must nicer than having the decorations up for most of November as well as December and the start of January.
Don't worry, you're all missing the real information here.
The light show is not truly delayed. They will be strung up at the same time and the switch will be thrown.
It's just that the lights themselves will not be bright enough to see until later in November because they are using the new compact fluorescents and they need to give them a few days to warm up.

It's unfortunate they shortened the festivities this year. The look on my daughter's face was priceless when we turned the corner and entered the display area... I was really hoping it to experience it again this November when we are back at WDW.

Has anyone attended the actual ceremony when the lights are officially turned on for the season with Mickey?
Thanks!

You will be able to see the lights, they just won't be turned on. They install the lights during the overnight hours and it takes a while to get them all up.

I thought the lights themselves were mostly up by the end of October?
Do the do any testing or any chance of seeing them on earlier then the announced date.

I've been there when they are doing testing and soft openings. Sometimes it's just part of the display, somtimes all of it with no music and sometimes they do dancing lights. When I've seen them preopening it was just by chance. If you're there in November it wouldn't hurt to walk through that area and see.

What time of day can I expect the lights to be on? I will be there Dec 3rd and the park hours are listed to close at 8pm. I would think by 4pm they would be on but I've never been so hoping someone who has can enLIGHTen me!

When we were there the last two years, they lights would begin dancing about a half hour prior to the first Fantasmic showing on any given day. I can't recall if that meant they went at 5:30 or 6:00 or what. But look at the Fantasmic schedule, and that might give you an idea of when they start. That is, if they follow the pattern of the last two years.

I believe it's 6:00 to park closing, which is usually around 8 during the holiday season. They do run throughout evening EMH, though. As always, verify with a CM that day in the park in case there are any changes.
