My wife and I are close to a purchase at AKV. We normally vacation the week after memorial day and would like to use the points purchased for our 2009 trip to WDW. I understand that the points will be available May 1, 2009.
The guide indicated that DVC would assign a December UY which seemed reasonable. I assumed that a better UY was not available.
The terms offered were $96/point and 10 percent down with the balance due in 60 (or was it 90) days.
It seems like the time is right. This is our first purchase so thanks in advance for any thoughts.

If you havent't listed a referral person, do so now! Disney will give the referrer $200 Disney Dollars, and they usuually, will split it with you! Thus another $100.00 off your point cost.
Your guide can block your desired dates off for you, so when your AKV come in, it won't be too late to book Memorial Day 2009.
Enjoy and welcome home neighboor!

The current promotions are lousy. And a Dec. UY is probably the worst UY you can get. August, if avail would be slightly better. Try to ask for it.
If you want to gamble, I would wait until after July 1(only a few weeks away), when BLT/sandwich tower gets active. My bet is that when BLT goes online, AKV sales will plummet. They will have to give a better promotion when that happens.
However, there is a downside.... DVC could raise the prices and not give a promotion, in that case, you will have made, in hindsight, a bad financial decision!!
Weigh your choices carefully before you make that decision. The price you have now is not great... but it could get worse. On the other hand, waiting may present you will a much better buying opportunity!!

David, I don't understand your points above.
Isn't Memorial day the last monday in May? (At least in the USofA?)
So if you only have 8 months to bank points, and the OP has a December UY (July 31st deadline for banking) and needs to cancel their May ressie, they can still bank their points (if cancelled at least 31 days in advance) into the next UY, or they have May-November (6 additional months) to rebook a vacation with the same points or worse, holding points.
Now an August UY would be horrible, totally wrong for this owner.....
August UY, points must be banked by February 28th or (29th). Thus instead of being able to cancel a May ressie 31 days before forbanking purposes (April), they must cancel by the end of Feb (They have lost 2 months additional banking window for their planned vacations. Worse, if not bankable, or holding points, they would exoire in July not November.
So one of us has misunderstood this question, the question has been edited, but one set of advice is harmful IMHO.
In general, My Dec UY is my 2nd favorite our of 6, only my September is more useful, and that is both for renting and personal use.
Good luck!

I'm with the frog. I don't see how a December use year could possibley be bad for a person who likes to travel end of May/beginning of June each year. I think it would be nearly ideal. YOu have plenty of time to rebook within the use year or bank points.
Unfortunately, with the new banking changes, we have absolutely no flexibility with our normal vacation times. Witha March use year and usually traveling December through May, our December, January and February trips will be in serious jeopardy should we need to cancel them. Of course, March and May are fine yet!

I stand corrected. When I re-read the OP, I realized that I was thinking of Labor day, not Memorial day.
Sorry, about that.
So, Dec, Feb, Mar would be the best UY in this particular example.

We just (yesterday) purchased 250 points at AKV. We were told that you could actually purchase Jambo house points and use them this year (as opposed to waiting until May '09). Virtually all other UYs were available. I'm just throwing this our there, OP, in case you're worried about getting ressies for next year.

Wow! Congrats.
I really wanted Jambo and according to my guide, I would have had to been waitlisted.
Regardless, it's an awesome resort.

Well, I know Feb, Mar, and April were definitely available.
Thanks! We decided we liked AKV best, so we'll be dumping our SSR points within a year (after our January '09 vacation).

Ok, I am reading this and getting a bit confused. Maybe I should be posting a separate thread for this but here it goes.
We purchased SSR at the beginning of Feb. We have a June UY. I will admit was not that knowledgable when purchasing & just took the use year that they gave me. We were given 2007 points & were told to bank right away, which I did. Guess I never realized different use years could affects vacations and booking. Can you explained the pros/cons of different UY and what is considered the best? If it matters, at this point we are planning Jan-March vacations but can't say we won't want anywhere between Oct and April in the future.
(If this needs to be moved, I will not be offended I just may not be able to find it.)
Thanks!

Wouldn't it be funny if all this hoopla about July 1st was only for GCV sales to go online. Don't get me wrong. I'm waiting for BLT (Yech!) but I haven't seen any pictures that would indicate 70% completion of the facade by July 1st.

Thanks to all for your response.
I understand that for a December UY the points must be banked by July 31st. (Thanks David and Tony)
Great info on the availability in Jambo House. The incentive is nice; equal to getting the reservation for May 2009. (Thanks Admin)

My husband and I are also looking into buying at AKV. This is what our guide told us.
They would match what we bought with an equal number of bonus points, which we must use at SSR, or an I I exhange, or at DLand, in the next 12 months, this being another of our AKV incentives.
We would get our contract points in Dec. of this year, 2008, but could not use them until May, 2009, when the second phase of AKV opens. However the matched bonus points we can use as mentioned above in the next 12 months.
The dues will not be payable until May 09 when the second phase opens so that is a $900 to $1,400 savings this next year also.
I am hoping we make our decision soon because it's driving me crazy not knowing because we are planning a trip for March 2009

We bought AKV 6/16/08 we were lucky enough to get an April UY which is perfect for us since we usually travel late May early June. We got matching developer points, $8 per point discount, and the $500 disney visa rewards. As the pp above said be sure to get yourself a referral. Your referer will split it with you and that's an additional $100 incentive. I wish I had known about that prior to my purchase an extra $100 would have been awesome.

If anyone needs/wants a refferal name, PM me, and I'll forward you the $200.00 Disney dollars when they come.
