DAY 4 – Monday 5/26/08
Who: Sue (49), DVC member

Plan: AK or MK, Pool, Comedy Warehouse

Actual: Once again I woke up really early, then fell back asleep and this time woke up with the alarm at 7. I showered, dressed, finished & posted the report, and had an English muffin & cappuccino for breakfast again. SB had wanted me to wake him up at 8:15, so I called him then, and after we chatted briefly I gathered what I needed for the day and headed to the bus stop. Today is my “trash & towel” day, so I pulled the privacy sign off the door so the housekeeper would know she can come in.

The housekeeper was outside my door when I left, so I’m assuming she had my studio finished before I even reached the bus stop. This time the Magic Kingdom bus arrived just after I got there, which was a pleasant surprise considering last night. We got to MK by 8:45, and arrived before the ferry & monorail so I pretty much breezed through the bag check & the turnstiles without anyone in front of me at either. I stood in the shade waiting for the opening show to finish, then walked down Main Street with everyone else.

I started with Space Mountain but since I was so near the front of the crowd I just rode it without getting a fastpass. I was back outside, finished with the ride, by 9:15. My next stop was Peter Pan’s Flight, which I did with no wait on my way over to Frontierland. Big Thunder had a 10-minute wait posted but I don’t think it took that long. I waited for the next train so I could be in the last car, and it was a nice ride. Afterwards I walked back to Fantasyland, coming in along the path next to the castle. I had about a 2 minute wait to ride the Pooh attraction, and then I headed back to do Haunted Mansion. I realize I zig-zagged across the park, but when I’m solo I can do that without anyone bitching <g>. Plus, I knew exactly which attractions I wanted to ride, and didn’t mind walking extra in between them.

By now I was just about done, so I went back to Tomorrowland one more time to end the morning by riding Tomorrowland Transit Authority. The park was looking much busier now, but the waits at Buzz Lightyear and Space Mountain were still listed as 10 minutes. It was 10:30 or so when I got off the TTA, so I worked my way back down Main Street and exited the park. There were many possible ways I could have gotten to Downtown Disney from here, but I decided to take a bus to OKW and ride the boat from there – realizing it would probably take a while.

As I got to the OKW bus stop a bus pulled up, but he was only dropping people off. He suggested I let the person with the radio know I was here so a bus could be called. That cm came over, and she explained that in the morning the buses drop off but don’t pick up, which seems rather stupid to me. Why send a bus back empty to get more people, especially when there are people who want to get to a resort early?? She said she’d have a bus for me in about 10 minutes, and that was pretty accurate. I was the only passenger, and spent the time chatting with the driver, who was also a dvc member.

At OKW I got off at the Peninsular bus stop, and walked over to the Hospitality House area. The bus to Downtown Disney left 10 minutes ago, and wouldn’t be back for another 20. I thought about just taking a bus, but instead I sat on the steps at the dock and read some of the Reader’s Digest I had in my bag. Surprisingly, the boat pretty much filled up when it arrived, and at the Saratoga Springs stop he had to leave people at the dock because there was no more room. Now why those people don’t just WALK over is beyond me – none of them looked like they had mobility problems. From the boat dock it’s an easy walk to the West Side, and a longer walk to the Marketplace. Trust me, the boat ride is nothing special, since they switched us over to those tacky bigger boats like at Port Orleans.

I got off at the Marketplace and looked in the Christmas store. A co-worker is getting married soon, but they didn’t really have anything nice for bride & groom. By now it was close to noon, so I went to Wolfgang Puck’s Express and just beat the line! I was hungry, so I ordered the tortilla soup and the side Caesar I’d enjoyed last time. To go with it I had a glass of the 14 Hands Riesling that I loved last time. Now I have the name of it, as I looked for it in Publix by looking for a familiar label but didn’t see it. I can look in Total Wine at home now that I know what it is. The food was excellent, and I was able to eat just about all of it. The soup comes in a bowl that looks big, but it’s only about ½ inch deep. I guess that’s why it’s only $3.95 <g>.

While I was eating my lunch, a large family took the 2 tables on either side of me. They had 4 little kids at one table, and older people at the other – all jabbering in Spanish back & forth. I asked the dad if he’d like my table, and I’d take his – so they could all be together. He agreed, and thanked me, but truthfully – I did it as much for myself as for them <g>.

When I finished lunch I browsed through some of the shops, again looking for wedding gift idea but coming up with nothing. She’s not a Disney person, but maybe I’ll get a basket of stuff from Basin tomorrow. I decided to head back to the resort, since SB’s game had started. At the bus stop the day started going bad. The wait was ridiculous! I was seeing the 2nd bus for some resorts, and still nothing for Boardwalk. Many buses were dropping off only, but not picking up anyone. Some trashy woman drove in with an ugly PT cruiser and drove into the buses-only area. She parked in a spot for Disney vehicles only, because after all the rules don’t apply to her. She had a little boy with her, and they’d walk (holding hands) around right where the buses drive in. Finally the tattooed smoking woman she was waiting for arrived from the Marketplace, and they all went to the car. But – first they stopped to let the little boy urinate in the bushes (in public). And then they got into their ugly rental car and drove away. The hordes of people at the bus stop were just in shock, lol – you could hear the hushed comments being made.

Finally a bus came and went to the next bus stop, but flashed the names of our resorts so we all ran over there and stormed the bus – almost filling it. By now it had been at least 45 minutes of waiting, which is totally unacceptable. I need to remember this and last night when I get my comment survey after the trip. We stopped at Pleasure Island, where of course we had a bus driver change and the new guy must have had to fill out 17 pages of reports or something because we sat there a long long time. Next stop was Typhoon Lagoon where 4 people got off and several more crammed on. After that it went to the Swan, and I bolted off the bus there to avoid being on it for another 30 minutes as it went to the Dolphin, then Yacht Club, then Beach Club, and finally Boardwalk. It would have been almost 2 hours to get back to my resort if I’d stayed on, and previously I thought people who said they had a 2-hour bus experience were grossly exaggerating. Now I see they probably were being honest. Needless to say, I’m done with the friggin’ buses and I will be letting Disney know I feel about their transportation for people staying at their deluxe resorts!

It was a nice walk back to the Boardwalk, and soon I was up in my studio. I tuned into SB’s game about halfway through, and soon their pitcher just lost it and the other team massacred them (scoring 10 runs in a single inning). It was absolutely disgusting, and did little for my mood.

I updated the report, then uploaded some photos while watching General Hospital and trying to ignore the game. General Hospital ended up being a repeat of an episode from over a year ago, which made no sense. It was the start of a big story that ran for weeks, so why play it again? SB’s hitter made a valiant comeback, but the team still lost by a couple of runs. When it ended sometime after 4 I headed out of the studio unsure exactly what I was going to do.

It was pretty nice out, so I thought about just wandering around the Epcot resorts area, but decided to just go ahead into Epcot again. The weather today was nicer (bit cooler) than normal, and I wanted to enjoy it! I started in France and sprayed a little Insolence on my wrists in the Guerlain shop, then browsed through the shop where the movie lets out. They have some cute shirts, but I have more than I can possibly wear already. I don’t outgrow my clothes, I wear them out – but it takes decades.

I continued walking, and stopped to look in the big store in Japan, then went to the counter service place for a cup of ice. Next I went to Germany and got a glass of wine, and noticed that German wine tastes the same whether the ice is German or Japanese <g>. I took the wine and ice back to the USA and found a seat for the 5:45 Cowsill’s concert with about 15 minutes to wait. The concert was similar to yesterday, but today they ran over by almost 10 minutes. As one brother said to the other – it’s just the 8:15 show they have to stick to the time, due to the fireworks. Evie – they did Hair again. It was a very nice concert, and when it ended I left Epcot and walked back to the Boardwalk.

continued...

I had about 15 minutes to kill, so I hung out in the studio and left just before 7 to drive to Pleasure Island. I hated giving up my great parking space in the Boardwalk parking lot, but I could not face the buses! Knowing parking at Downtown Disney could be a pain, I purposely used the West Side parking lot, and found a space about 6 rows back. I didn’t care how far I walked – I just didn’t want to be circling endlessly looking for a space!

I wanted something to eat, but wasn’t in the mood for real food so I got a plain pretzel at Wetzel’s. They give a 20% discount to dvc members, but I had never gotten over there to take advantage of the savings. I think the pretzel ended up being around $3 – and it was pretty good. I sat on a shady bench enjoying the breeze and ate the pretzel. I had time to wander around the West Side a little bit, then returned to Pleasure Island and got my wrist band at the Adventurer’s Club. I ran into Jim Roberts (keyboard at Comedy some nights) and his wife & son coming out and chatted with them. Their “baby” is around 3 now, and full of energy!

Leesa was in her usual spot inside, so I joined her until it was time for Comedy Warehouse.
Carol Stein was on the keys again, and the 8:00 cast was Philip, Mary, Missy, David & Lisa. It was a very small crowd – barely halfway up the stairs. They did Fill in the Blank using 2 audience volunteers. Lisa & Philip were a couple vacationing in Italy, when she announced she was pregnant and he immediately started trying to do things cheaper now that he had to support a baby on his salary as a waiter at Bennigans. David came in as the snooty French room service waiter, and it was a funny scene. Afterwards Philip thanked the 2 volunteers by presenting them each with one of the old bottles of Disney shampoo that used to be in the rooms, lol. One of the volunteers looked a little put out by the shampoo thing, but if you don’t have a sense of humor, go home.

Next was Madrigal, led by Philip. The initial songs were “Box turtles take over Canada”, “Lindsey Lohan marries Bigfoot”, “Alien devours Cleveland”, and “Pregnant toyboy”. It went really well, as the 4 suggestions provided a lot of material instead of consisting of 4 celebrity names and not much else that’s different. They also did Cliché, which is my favorite. Mary was the one tortured, having to guess that she was in a Tim Horton’s doughnut shop in Canada, and then the cliché of “Throw the bully over the fence….some hay”. It made no sense to most of us, which made it tougher for her and extra funny for us. She actually picked up 1 word on her own from the first clue, and then another during the guessing process. They all did a great job, and afterwards the people who had suggested it stopped by to explain it on the way out. We got out of the club to get out of the way of the cast members cleaning up, and I visited with Mary outside – catching up on stuff.

When we went back inside one of the servers mentioned new hours start on June 1st. They actually make more sense – no more one set of times 4 nights a week and a different set the other 3 nights. Now every night the first show is 8:00 (seating time, or door opening time), followed by 9:05, 10:15, and 11-something (whatever it currently is Sun-Wed). On Thu-Sat they’ll just add a 5th show sometime after the last one.

The 9:05 cast was Mary, Krista, Philip, Missy & David. David & Mary were manufacturing tires, and then the others would come in to replace one person at a time and begin a new scene using those physical positions. It might sound weird, but it worked well and was very funny. They did Forgotten Songs, which is always great. Philip sang “Southern Girl”, about a girl he met at the rv park and when he met her parents found out they were his aunt & uncle. Missy was a guest and Krista was someone in the college program singing “Disney took all my money”. The highlight was Mary & David doing “Jumping Rabbits”. It was such a nothing of a song, but they made it fun. It was the national anthem of the Antibbes (sp?), and it was repetitive but that made it funnier. The others eventually came out and stood behind them – Philip as a rabbit wearing a liberace-style white tuxedo jacket with tails & sequins, Lisa as another rabbit, and Missy with a boa & non-rabbit stuff but I guess they ran out of rabbit props, lol.

Next Missy & David created a play about being in a spaceship taking off from Alaska. They had to redo it twice – once in the style of action romance, and then as country rap music. It was another good show, and once again I enjoyed spending time with Mary until the next one. Thankfully my next trip begins on a Thursday (work holiday is Friday), so I won’t miss seeing her again. Not only is she one of the very best onstage, she’s one of the nicest people I’ve ever known.

The 10:15 cast was Mary, Krista, Lisa, Christine, and Missy – all women. They did Styles, which was called by Lisa. That girl reminds me of Matt sometimes in the sense that she gets going and her mind is racing from one funny thought to another and it’s exhausting (but fun) to watch & try to keep up, lol! I commented to Leesa that Lisa is absolutely goofy – meant with admiration. In Styles Krista & Missy were in the produce section of a supermarket, later joined by Mary, and they had to change their scene to different styles of music, movie, tv & theater as Lisa saw fit. Lisa finally ended the scene at “soap opera erotica”, lol.

Next Lisa & Christine began a scene brushing their teeth. Other actors would tag one of them and replace them, again using the physical positions but starting a new scene. After that they did World’s Worst occupations, and everything worked really well. The whole show was great, and ended all too soon. I’d talked to SB before this show, and knew he’d gotten back safely from his road trip to Portland Maine. He was going to be waiting for my call once I got back to the resort, so I headed out once the show ended. When I’d parked here earlier I was between two jumbo trucks, and I was glad to see they’d both left or I might have had trouble seeing to back out.

I got back to the Boardwalk just after 11:30, and was shocked to not only see lots of empty parking spaces, but my original spot was empty too! I parked there, and walked up the hill and to my studio. I called SB to say goodnight one last time, then worked on the report and took care of emails. I decided to call it quits around 12:30, planning to finish and post it sometime tomorrow.

Today was a mixed day. The time at MK was very nice, and I had a very good lunch at Puck’s Express. The bus service was a nightmare, and Disney will hear about it on my opinion survey once I get home. I won’t be using the buses any more this trip, so I won’t have any more aggravation there. Comedy Warehouse was great tonight, and it was terrific seeing Mary again.

Tomorrow I plan to do a load of laundry, since I won’t have time at home before I leave to go see SB at the end of the week. I’ll also go out for breakfast, spend time at the pool, maybe hit the gym, then spend some time in Epcot late afternoon & early evening.

14 hands is a local Washington State wine and is one of DW's favorites. They primarily sell to restaurants only... but she has found one wine shop about 1.5 hours away (but close to our beach condo) that claims they are the only shop in Oregon that sells it. You probably realize that 14 hands named for the height of the horses that used to run wild on what now is the vineyard.

Sorry to hear about your horrible bus experience Sue.

Forgive my ignorance, but this "opinion survey", is this only for DVC Members? :scratchch

I have sent emails through Disney's official website but always wonder if my concerns are being addressed properly as they would be on an actual 'survey'.

Another great report day.....thanks for sharing. :D

Yes, when I saw the horse on the label I realized what the 14 hands meant. I'm hoping I can find it around Ft Myers - it's very good.

I'm enjoying your trip report Sue! I have never gone to the Comedy Warehouse. Are the earlier shows "family friendly"? I think I remember reading somewhere that the earlier shows are "cleaner" than the later ones. I am very interested in trying it out but I don't like raunchy comedy with bad language and I really don't want to take my daughter to see that. I assumed that it would all be fairly clean, but someone told me it was not. I wanted to ask someone that frequently goes there for the real story! Thanks.

There's never bad language or swearing there - not in any show. The actors would get fired! That said, it's intended for adults, and if the actors see kids in the audience they'll hold back on the innuendo stuff - which really isn't fair to the rest of the crowd. I don't know how old your daughter is, but if you're really concerned your best bet is to skip it or leave her at a kids' club. It's not the actors you'd need to worry about - it's the other guests who are making the suggestions and telling their "embarrassing stories". Sometimes a guest will use a swear word or otherwise be inappropriate (especially if they're drunk), but the actor will not repeat it or encourage it.

Depending on how old your daughter is, chances are she's heard worse at school from the other kids. But, it's your call whether to take her or not. The later the show, the more drunk the audience will be, and more crowded, so you're more likely to get something wild then!

Thanks! My daughter is now 14, so I'm sure she's heard it all at school. I didn't think it would be bad, but someone told me it wasn't "family friendly" when my kids were small so I have never tried it. My other kids are now 19 and 21. I think I waited all these years to go for nothing! I should have tried it earlier. Actually, I never put it high on the priority list of things to do and we usually run out of time before we run out of things to do! You would think after being there at least yearly for the past 15 years we would have seen/done everything. That's one of the best things about Disney - - there's always something new to try! I will have to put it on the list of things to check out now! I appreciate your help.

It is very Disney. With your kids ages... there is nothing to worry about IMHO.
