DAY 2 – Saturday 5/24/08
Who: Sue (49), DVC member

Plan: MK or AK extra magic hour, LeCellier, Epcot

Actual: I slept really well, not waking up until the alarm went off at 6am. 6am seems like a terrible time to get up on vacation, but oh well. I’ve yet to hear a peep from any neighbors or people in the hallway or outside, which is just the way I like it! I showered, dressed, and toasted an English muffin to eat with my cappuccino. I was out the door just before 7:30, on my way to the bus stop.

Although Animal Kingdom was the only park opening early, we saw 2 Magic Kingdom buses. The cast member explained they run early to get people to their character breakfasts. The AK bus was next, and it arrived empty. After loading us up we stopped next at the Swan, and then the Dolphin. By this point there wasn’t room for another person, and the driver repeatedly told people to push all the way back to make room.

We got to AK right about 8, and it was pretty busy at the turnstiles. I chose one off to the right, and a mother and teen daughter was ahead of me. The lines eventually break into 2, as there are 2 turnstiles. I just watched the mom hop from one to the other, just cutting right back in front of me or the person in the other line. She’d move to the left, but if that line slowed she’d hop over to the right. Finally as we were almost there she was in my line (directly in front of me, directly behind the guy inserting his pass), and her daughter was in the other. The guy with the pass had trouble, so she hopped back over with her daughter, then the guy got through so she hopped back over in front of me and nearly knocked me over with her backpack. Then she gets through, and pauses IN the turnstile. I already had my pass almost inserted, and she’s standing there telling her daughter (who was directly behind the person inserting their pass over there) to come over. I snarled at her – “Just go on in”. She was stunned, and stepped aside, then turned to me and said “how Ruuuuuuuuuude”, lol! It wasn’t worth the breath to try & explain that she’s the rude one, so I just went on my way.

My first stop was Primeval Whirl, which had no wait at all. When I came back around the cm asked if I wanted to ride again, so I stayed on for a 2nd ride. She asked again after that, but I decided to head elsewhere – I like it, but twice is enough. I walked over to Harambe and was a sweaty mess by the time I got there. It’s SO hot here today! The standby time for Kilimanjaro Safari was 10 minutes, and fastpasses were being issued with a 15-minute return, so I just got in the standby line. It never stopped moving, and soon I was on the safari vehicle.

Unfortunately, I was seated in the middle of a row – they filled it up with a party of 2, then me, then another solo. I wasn’t able to take any photos because whenever something worth photographing was nearby I was blocked by the girl next to me. The white rhino was right next to the truck, and the male lion was sitting up proudly for all to admire.

When the safari ended I decided to leave the park, as it was way too hot for anything that isn’t air conditioned. At the bus stop area it took 25 minutes for the Epcot bus to arrive – and there were already 2 parties waiting when I arrived. On the plus side, we were dropped off at the very closest bus stop, which was nice.

Entering Epcot was a mob scene, but inside the park it wasn’t busy at all. It was shortly after 10 and Soarin’ was up to a 40 minute wait, and Spaceship Earth had a line, but otherwise it wasn’t busy at all. I walked right onto the Nemo ride, and about halfway through heard the voicemail chime on my cell phone. When I got off the ride I tried calling the voicemail as I stood right by the exit doors, but even there I could not get a signal. I had to step outside and a little bit away from the building before I could get SB’s message. I called him back, and chatted briefly before he had to have his players take the field for warmup work.

Next I went over to the Land, and decided to ride Living With the Land since the line was very short. It was a bit warm in there, but otherwise enjoyable. The aqua farming area smelled pretty fishy, and several of the little alligators were holding their heads up. Usually they’re just laying down when I’m in here. After the ride I picked up a fastpass for Soarin’, which has a time of 12-1pm but I’ll use it later in the day when I return for the evening.

Back outside I decided my focus would be air conditioning, so I rode the ride in Imagination. I was the only person on the group of 4 cars, lol! What can I say – the ride isn’t great but I got to sit in air conditioning for 10-15 minutes. The tip board was still saying Spaceship Earth was only 10 minutes, so I walked over there and realized it was at least twice that long. So, I didn’t stay! I thought about Ellen’s Energy Adventure, since it is air conditioned, but the line wasn’t moving and I was curious when I saw the Wonders of Life pavilion was open as a festival garden center – I think it was called Garden Town. I don’t garden, but standing outside in the heat was less appealing than a gardening exhibit at this point so I went over there!

To my surprise, they had a lot of stuff in there, and it was really nice. Some people were doing a gardening seminar, and there was an empty space with chairs where something else would be happening later. The little snack bar is open, and they had a nice little menu. The cast member said they’re the best kept secret in Epcot these days. I told her I might be back for dinner. The area that was dedicated to DVC during Food & Wine is now used for art with a flower & garden theme. Overall, it was a pleasant diversion and got me out of the heat & humidity for a while.

By now it was shortly after 11, and my LeCellier reservation was for 12 noon. I walked to World Showcase, starting in Mexico. I’d brought my camera along and took several photos along the way. I’ll post the link at the end of the report. In Mexico I did the boat ride, sitting behind a nice couple from Kentucky. He turned around to ask if this was my first visit, and we just struck up a conversation – he was so nice I didn’t hold it against him for calling me “ma’am”, lol! This was his 2nd visit, and his wife’s first, and he didn’t know anything about Soarin’ but I stressed they should go get fastpasses before they were gone!

About 11:30 I called the person from the DIS board I was meeting for lunch, but I must have entered her phone number wrong because I got someone who clearly did not want to have lunch with me – oops! Either that, or she had second thoughts, lol! I continued walking around, and stopped to ride the Maelstrom since there was no line there either. As I passed through the USA the real Susan (from DIS) called, and we met outside LeCellier once I got over there. They’d confiscated my axe when I entered Epcot earlier, so there was no axe murdering going on at this lunch!

We were seated almost immediately, and had a good lunch (food & service). We both started with the cheese soup – excellent as always. I skipped the wine and just had ice water, thinking I’d be less full if I got something in addition to the soup. I ordered the spicy chicken chipotle sausage appetizer as my meal, and Susan had the prime rib sandwich. I’d never tried the sausage before, and it was basically a sausage – very spicy sausage! It came on corn polenta, which was pretty good. It’s not something I’d order again, but I ate about half of it and was glad I’d tried it. Maybe next time I’ll try the tomato stack. We were both too full for dessert, so we settled the check & headed outside to find clouds, thunder, and occasional lightning. This certainly seemed like a good time to head back to the resort & listen to SB’s game! It was nice meeting Susan and having lunch together – and we both lived to tell about it. Well, you at least know I lived – you’ll have to take my word for it that she’s not dismembered and buried in the Canadian garden area, lol!

continued...

On my way back I took a few more photos, and stopped in the Boardwalk Bakery. The breakfast paninis I’d seen on the menus at allearsnet.com are now croissant sandwiches. I’d planned to try a panini, but don’t want a croissant, so I’m glad I found this out now. I wandered around a bit more, then got back to my studio before the rains came! It didn’t rain for long, but it might be one of those days where it rains, stops, rains again, etc.

I poured a glass of wine, and read an email from a dvc friend who is here at Saratoga Springs right now. I gave her a call and we chatted – hopefully we’ll meet up at some point later in the trip. I spent the afternoon online, listening to his game & updating the report. This studio doesn’t have a dvd player, which I thought was weird. Perhaps Boardwalk hasn’t added them yet, and they also have the old-fashioned 19 inch tv in the large armoire that would hold one that’s much larger. Normally I wouldn’t think about watching a dvd here, but while SB is away I’m using his NetFlix account. Once I watch Daddy Day Camp I can mail it back and they’ll send me a BJ Thomas dvd, lol! I’m hoping to have that waiting for me when I get back from seeing SB, so I might have to watch the movie on the laptop some evening.

After the game I went out to wander around a bit, and confirmed that the quiet pool was indeed open! It was due to be under rehab through my stay, but someone staying here posted seeing the fence coming down yesterday afternoon. Several people were at the pool, including a couple grilling burgers & hot dogs for the 2 of them. It smelled good – why does crappy ordinary food smell so good when it’s grilled, lol! I checked out Muscles & Bustles fitness center, and liked what I saw. I’m not in the mood for it today, so I’m going to skip it but will probably stop by tomorrow. I asked the cast member where the guest laundry for the villas side was, and he offered to call to find out. He was told it’s between rooms 3285 and 3287.

I didn’t think that was right, as the front desk person said it was on the first floor, but I went upstairs to the 3rd floor and found that there IS no 32xx rooms in the villas! That must be the laundry room for the Inn side. I went down to the concierge folks in the lobby and found out it’s actually right around the corner from the fitness center on the first floor! I went back down, and sure enough – it was right there behind the first door past the elevators. It’s open, too – so I will do some laundry on Monday or Tuesday.

When I got back to the studio SB called, so we talked for a while and then about 4:30 I walked back over to Epcot. The sun had been shining for a while now, and although it was very warm it felt less humid than before. I was still a sweaty mess in no time, once I got in direct sunlight though. Susan commented on how hot it was at lunch, too – she doesn’t remember it ever feeling this hot/humid at this time before. Glad it’s not just me, lol!

Once in Epcot I went to the Land and used my Soarin’ fastpass. There were no fastpasses left, and I didn’t notice the standby time when I went in, but when I came out the line was quite a bit shorter and it was posted as 90 minutes. It’s a great ride, but I wouldn’t wait that long for anything.

I decided to try Spaceship Earth, but the line was still too long. It was almost 5:30 so I decided to try to make the 5:45 Gary Puckett concert. Foolishly I started World Showcase on the Canada side and since I got to the USA a few minutes before 5:45 I continued past it to get a glass of wine in Germany. I could have been more efficient just going the other way! I got back to the theater during the first song, so I didn’t miss much. This time I sat on the wall since it was shady there and it was just too hot to be sitting close to a bunch of people.

I figured out what turned me off about Gary Puckett last night. When he sings, he’ll sometimes hold the end note really long, in the style of the cowardly lion in the Wizard of Oz (If I was the king of the forehehehehehst). The first time he did it, I thought surely this was a joke, meant to elicit laughter, but he was doing it seriously, lol! Other than that one thing he was great – his voice is good, the songs are good, he’s not obnoxious like Little Richard, and he seems like a really nice guy.

During the concert I had the pleasure of meeting little Anthony. He must have been around 4-5 years old, and climbed up on the wall next to me. He started walking all over the wall, sitting on the railing, etc – and finally his mother got up and came over to him. Every time she would tell him to do something or not do something he would simply shout NO. If she went towards him, he’d take off running where she couldn’t go. When he’d pass her, he’d give her a shove as he ran by. Little Anthony needed a trip to the woodshed, badly. Although I hate brats, I realize kids aren’t born brats – innocent babies are raised & taught to be brats, and seeing this mother being so ineffective and just letting him get away with acting out didn’t surprise me.

After the concert I went back to Spaceship Earth and this time the line was quite a bit shorter. I pick different choices each time at the end, but by now I’m starting to see some repetition, lol. It was still a nice ride, though. I thought about trying for the 7pm concert, but then I got to talking with SB for a while and realized I’d miss at least half of it by the time I got there. I also missed getting back to Garden Town for dinner (greek salad) since I wasn’t hungry earlier and they closed at 7.

I decided to just leave the park, since there wasn’t anything I really wanted for dinner there. I walked along the Beach Club side and went to Hurricane Hanna’s to get their grilled chicken salad. I love that, and the leftovers keep well. Unfortunately, they only had 1 girl working the food side, and she had this bozo at the counter who ordered a whole bunch of food & then told her it was the meal plan but 2 different rooms. So, she had to sort it all out & it took forever. In the meantime the line got really long, and people were getting really irritated at the situation.

When it was my turn, I was able to get my salad right away because it’s already prepared & packaged. I tried to catch the boat to the Boardwalk, but after running down the dock and then waiting while they boarded a lady in a wheelchair, the cm lifted the ramp and told me the next boat would be along in about 10 minutes! I was pissed! So, I walked back – there was no way in hell I could stand there fuming waiting for the next boat.

It was a hot walk, but I got back shortly after the boat arrived, and went up the staircase at my end of the building rather than walking all the way up to the lobby. I put the salad in the fridge while I finished up the report and posted it. I plan to watch the Daddy Day Camp movie on the laptop, which means I can’t use the computer for other stuff during that time. At least it’s a short movie, lol!

Today was a nice day, but it was so friggin’ hot!! I’ll be glad when it starts cooling off, even though that’s 5-6 months from now. I got to do all I wanted in the parks today, enjoyed meeting Susan at lunch, and attended another terrific concert. Tomorrow will be a lazier day, with some pool time and then Comedy Warehouse later at night!

Then she gets through, and pauses IN the turnstile. Whoa....I have absolutely NO patience for people like that.....I'm surprised the CM didn't say anything like "keep moving ma'am" or something.... :headbrick

After the ride I picked up a fastpass for Soarin’, which has a time of 12-1pm but I’ll use it later in the day when I return for the evening.

So they'll honor your fastpass even if its past your 'return window'? I wasn't aware of that.

This studio doesn’t have a dvd player, which I thought was weird.

So do ALL STUDIOS at the DVC Resorts have DVD players? That's good to know.

During the concert I had the pleasure of meeting little Anthony. Although I hate brats, I realize kids aren’t born brats – innocent babies are raised & taught to be brats, and seeing this mother being so ineffective and just letting him get away with acting out didn’t surprise me.

:iagree: with you on this one.

Hurricane Hanna’s....Unfortunately, they only had 1 girl working the food side.

I'm surprised Disney doesn't have some sort of recovery plan, when lines get too long the cashiers should call for assistance....I work in retail and the rule is, if there's more than 3 people in line, call for backup! :cellphone

Today was a nice day, but it was so friggin’ hot!! I’ll be glad when it starts cooling off, even though that’s 5-6 months from now.

I hope its not that hot in mid October when we'll be there..... :sosad:

Looking forward to tomorrow's report.....no pressure! :D

Thanks for another report! Sounds like you're having a really nice time!

At the turnstiles the cm wasn't watching the lady in front of me - I think she was covering 2 turnstiles, and her attention was on the other one.

At Hurricane Hanna's the girl said she had a co-worker, but she was elsewhere - dinner break maybe?? The 2 guys on the bar side didn't come over to help at all, either. The couple in front of me complained to her about that, and she said earlier they were busy & she was doing nothing, so it's no big deal. Maybe no big deal to them, but I bet it was to the guests!

Fastpasses are taken any time AFTER the time, as long as it's the same date. Most of the studios seem to have dvd players now. Originally none of them had vcr or dvd, but over the years I've seen them more in the studios. I ended up watching the movie on the laptop, so it wasn't the end of the world.

Mid October is hard to predict. Some years it's nice, but many years it's still brutally hot! Hopefully at least the evenings will be not too bad, but we can't count on the days being nice yet. We can hope, though!

We've always gone in January/February but the last few years its been just so unbearably cold :brrrrrr: ...so I'm almost looking forward to 'sweating' a bit this fall....lol :umbrella:

Our preferred BWV studio did not have a DVD player this past December.
