With the cost of points going up to $100+ I was wondering if any of you see doing add-on's and purchases at these higher rates.
I am just so thankful I purchased when rates were really, really low, and I just don't know if I could justify any more points at those rates. However, that may be because I feel we probably have all the points we "should" ever need.
I do know that if any of the rumors do actually come to be true and if there is ever a DVC on the monorail, that would be mighty tempting. And I don't think that a small add-on would work either because I think a monorail DVC would be harder to get into than BCV is now.
So what do you guys think about $100+ points? Maybe we need a poll, but I am not sure how to set one up.

Rwe - I want to, but dh knows that on't we get out of the current point depression, we should have more than we need. :hehehehe:
FYI - To set up a poll, you can just start a new thread and teh second box of options from teh bottome will be "post a poll."

The price increase did not tempt me into doing an add-on, but it did prompt my DS to purchase a contract at VWL - first time buyers.

I know what you mean. We have been in the hole with points ever since the year we did a full Christmas week in a 2-bedroom and had weekend points, too. We have been slowly digging our way out of the hole ever since. I have learned that I would really like to be in a situation where I haven't borrowed at all. I did make it 6 months into this Use Year (Sep) before I broke down and booked a ressie that needed to borrow points. Not being in a "borrowed" status just makes it so much easier to manipulate your points, imho. Meaning, if the points are not borrowed, you can book ressies with the "anticipation" that you are going, but if flights, etc., don't work out, you are not penalized with those pesky "holding points".

Well, teh AK cruise this fall is a killer. (I knw not the most economical use of points, but it still saves money and I don't ahve to deal with renting.) After that, 1 trip a year in a studio should not cause problems. Knowing I only have 17 points that I can use before January 07 hurts, though.

Yikes........... I have about 150 2006 points left, and I was feeling point poor. I guess I just like having flexibility, and borrowing doesn't do that for me.

It makes me even happier about my SSR add on a year and a half ago. When DVC finally got registered in California to sell SSR, they gave California owners the pre-sale price which was $79 a point. On top of that, I also received the two free AP's as it coincided with the free AP deal.

Out of curiosity, I recall you saying you paid about $70 ea for your points. Did you have to pay closing costs or maintenance on top of that? What are the first year's points you get? 2005? 2006? 2007?
Honestly, the most we could use is about 75 points. We're over 1000 miles away, so it's not easy to get down there. Our kids will both be in school as of this fall and I'm not crazy about going during the summer or vacation periods. I can't see taking them out of school more than one week per year, so that pretty much leaves us with one annual trip.
As appealing as the Friends and Family discount was, 120 points is more than we need and we would have gone into debt to buy them. No way. I'd love to think resale is an option, but it seems like the prices on those smaller contracts go up quickly when you add in the other fees.
I guess I'll research it more when I've got the $6-7k sitting around ready for an add-on.

Hi!
We bought 80 points at 71 PP , and paid 425 dollars closing costs and I think the annual dues were included. We bought Hilton Head, and closing costs were more because of state laws.
We paid a total of 6500 all told for our points. We will start getting points in August which is our UY.
I live outside the US, and can only get to US every three years, so the plan is bank and borrow and use 3 years worth at a time. 240 points is just great for us.

My first purchase was a 100 pt. resale at OKW. I paid $70 per point and $400 or so in closing fees. I remember it was $400 for the closing and there were a couple of other small fees involved. They amounted to maybe $50 at the absolute most.
I paid maintenance fees for the year but, since I closed on the contract at the beginning of a January, that makes sense.
I think with the resale contracts, it'lll be dependent on where you want to buy. For something like BCV, It'd probably be more expensive to go for a small resale contract. In that situation, since you're not in a hurry to add on, I'd wait a while and put out the feelers with Disney.

FYI - Closing costs have come down a bit.
Closing Costs REDUCED on smaller point DVC Resale packages!
After much discussion between The Timeshare Store, Inc. and Timeshare Closing Services, Inc., we came to an agreement and wish to announce that the following prices will take effect as of Thursday July 28, 2005 for those purchasing from The Timeshare Store, Inc. (These prices are NOT retroactive, so please do not ask about it.)
These prices DO include the necessary title search and estopple information from Disney Vacation Club.
25pts to 50pts Closing Costs = $262 without Title Insurance Policy - additional $60 for Title Insurance Policy
51pts to 75pts Closing Costs = $299 without Title Insurance Policy - additional $60 for Title Insurance Policy
76pts to 100pts Closing Costs = $337 without Title Insurance Policy- additional $60 for Title Insurance Policy
DISboard Members, pat yourself on the back, we heard your voices!
The Timeshare Store, Inc., hopes this will be helpful when you make your smaller point package decision!

I want to add on, but I'm not going to until I have this first contract paid for, which will be 4 years at most. I am planning on paying it off much sooner and then saving cash for a small resale add-on at a different resort. We'll see how my plan goes. I want all debt other than house paid for before I add on again.

We too are looking at a 75-100 point add-on. I would like to go ahead and add-on now, but DW wants to wait a year or two and see what resort DVD announces next.

We have 2 seperate contracts for our BWV & BCV and added 100 OKW pts to the Dec. use yr thru Disney. We did this after checking with resalers and finding only stripped contracts and long (for us) waits vs. DVC direct we got 05 pts plus 06 and a small borrow from 06 gives us S-Thrs. in OKW GV. We could book as soon as we paid deposit which was perfect for our June week (DGKs out of school). Weighing the cost and the above mentioned issues. Direct from DVC worked best for us, this time and future purchase will only happen on Pre-sale at that monorail location DH wants so badly.
IMHO it really is up to each individual which works out best for them.
