View Full Version : Starting out small

I've been doing a little research and we're thinking of buying into DVC, but most likely from a resale. I'm thinking maybe 50-80 points. Then possibly adding on later...is this a smart thing to do?? I don't want to finance our DVC purchase. It would be much more comfortable financially for us to buy a smaller resale than directly from Disney. We typically vacation during slower times and most likely will continue to do so. I've looked at the points needed for our typical vacation time/length and 50-80 points would get us those vacations every year.
Now that being said...I can definitely see us wanting to add more points somewhere down the road. Is this difficult to do? How about coordinating use years, booking trips, etc??
Thanks!

We bought 50 points resale last year. It's just my wife and I and we wanted enough to do a week a year. The intention is to add on later. We also didn't want to finance.
But in retrospect, I'd have bought 60 points, enough for Sunday-Thursday at, say BCV or BWV.

Sounds like a good thing for you to do. Once you purchase your first resale, you can do small add-ons (as small as 25 points) direct from DVC, or look for additional resale contracts. When you add-on from DVC, all your points will be in the same UY, and under the same membership number.

If you buy multiple Use Years, you'll need to remember the different banking deadlines and won't be able to combine points from multiple contracts to make a single reservation without transferring points. IMO, it's much simpler to have just multiple contracts of the same UY under one membership number.

We have 50 points for now. I also wish that we had an additional 10 or 20 points just for a comfort zone. But, we too, didn't want to finance. With a lot of planning, 50 points can give you a lot of memories!!

What you are proposing to do is sound. Buying what you can afford is exactly what is recommended, wether its resale or direct from Disney.

The smallest add-on you can buy direct from Disney is 25 points.

We did something very similar (bought 120 resale though) as we wanted at least a 1 bedroom for the 3 of us. So far it has worked out well. We also did not want to finance and want to add on points. In addition, we were not 100% sure where we would want to own, especially with all of the DVC additions coming up, so by purchasing a small contract and traveling at off peak times, we'll be able to stay at diff. resorts to see where we want to add on more points!

I'm sure you're gonna love dvc and once you buy the add on itch will get you and its hard not to scratch.....

We too have started small. We have 25 points (The hardest thing to find) but we did. We did not want debts and financial worries. We are planning in adding on Cash as we save it. Also this way we are going to check DVC and see where we want to add on. Less Annual fees, You still will be in the club. If I need more points I would just have them transfered from another member, pay them and no debts. It is also very easy to sell a small contract we liked that in view of the Economy. We are happy for you. THe difficult part will be to find a small contract we waited a long time so just keep your eyes open, wish you the best!!

Question: We're thinking of doing the same thing, but Mikes' comment has left me needing clarification. If we purchase an additional number of points for our home resort through Resale can we not combine the two contracts for one reservation even if it's for the same resort?

If you could clarify on this point it would be appreciated.

Thanks
Don

Don,

I believe if you buy resale for the same use year at the same resort... and have it added on to your existing master contract, then both sets of points will "effectively" be combined into a single larger bucket of points.

If you do the same thing at different resorts... you can still use both sets of points at the 7 month mark.

If you add-on via resale, you can purchase a different Use Year but you will now have separate Membership Numbers and the points cannot be combined easily to make a single reservation. You'll need to transfer points between contracts to achieve that.

If you add-on via resale and purchase the same UY, it's still possible to end up with two different Membership Numbers unless your broker and/or the title company inform DVC Member Administration that you'd like the new contract transferred into your existing Membership Number.

If your resale contract is for the same UY and same resort *AND* you get MS to make your add-on a sub-contract (.001, .002, ...) then yes you can combine points at 11 months.

If your rresale is the same UY and for a different resort *AND* you get MS to make your add-on a sub-contract (.001, .002, ...) then yes you can combine points at 7 months.

If your resale is a different UY (doesn't matter if same resort or not), *OR* if it is the same UY but not a sub-contract (i.e. it keeps it's own Master Contract #), then no the points can not be combined, unless you transfer from one master account to the other.

However, whole nights can be booked in each contract and then linked together by MS, so that you will have only one check-in and one check-out for the entire trip, and will not have to switch rooms!

Clear as mud, right?
