View Full Version : Why Multiple Resorts...

I've noticed that a number of people have points spread all over.... what is the advantage of this?
I ask because I've noticed I could get Ft. Wilderness on a small contract right now at a seemingly good price. Something I could pay out of pocket...but I'm very very very interested in Kingdom Towers when it comes to pass (family history with the hotel, nostalgia galore for me).
What are the advantages/disadvantages?
Thank you!

Typically, the reason is that the owner wants the 11-month booking advantage of the Home Resort Priority Period in order to make it easier to get the resort they want, at the time they want, with the accommodations they want. This reduces any possible frustration at the 7-mo window, or having to “settle” for another reservation while missing out on the one you really had your heart set on.
I own at my 4 favorite resorts -- and I get to book a week at each every year at the 11-mo mark. I'm never disappointed.

Thank Mike!
Okay so does this mean that if I bought a small contract at Wilderness now, and bought at Kingdom Towers for the bulk that I'd be able to book at either one for the whole trip worth of days at the 11 month mark?
So say I wanted to stay at Ft. Wilderness for more than a week, I could reserve for that whole stay no matter which resort I held more points at???
Best,

If you have more than one home resort, all vacation points being used to make a reservation during the Home Resort Priority Period must be associated with that home resort. That is, you cannot combine points from multiple resorts to book one resort during the Home Resort Priority Period. You may combine all the points you have at all your home resorts and book any DVC resort only at the 7-month window.
So, if you own 100 points at VWL and 100 points at SSR, for example, you may only use the 100 VWL points at the 11-mo mark to book VWL, and the 100 SSR points to book SSR.

You can also bank and borrow though - so if you wanted to stay at the Wilderness one year, and the Beach Club another year, and only had 50 points at each, you could bank and borrow so that one year, you'd have 150 points to use at the Wilderness and 150 points to use at the Beach Club (and then nothing for the third year!) - but of course, you can do a combination of banking and borrowing to get the number of points you need with a small contract.
In my case, I have 57 points at the Beach Club, and had originally planned to stay there every three years (so, 171 points) but I decided that isn't enough - I want to go there EVERY year, so I'm in the process of buying another 150 points via resale.
Hope that helps!

We are thinking of adding on and have wondered about this as well. Right now we have 500 pts at SSR. If we wanted to book the 11 month window at AKV we would need to purchase enought points for a week - and also enough to make it a home resort, correct? We also are hoping to score some Hawaii when it comes available so, again, we would need enough for a week and to make it a home resort, am I correct in this assumption? Also, I'm assuming it would be of no benefit to purchase a small addon of say 75pts at AKV because we would not have the home resort or 11 month window option. It's all very confusing.

Melissa, I think you're confused on what a home resort is. If you own at a resort, it is your home. If you own at SSR and AKV, you have two home resorts. You can book your home resort at 11 months out, but only the points you own at that resort can be used for that reservation.
If you buy 75 points for AKV and you want to stay at AKV say the first week of December, the first week of January (11 months out) you could book your trip at AKV as long as the reservation didn't cost you more than 75 points. Or you could borrow from your next use year and use up to 150. You couldn't use any of your SSR points for that ressie.
So you always have the home resort booking advantage if you own points at the resort. You don't have just one home unless you only own at one resort like me.

It is popular to buy 1/2 or 1/3 of the points needed for a resort stay... and then stay every 2-3 years via banking and borrowing.

ok, I think I get it. For example if we wanted to stay at AKV then we would buy enough for a week. For example if it's 200 points to stay at AKV at the time we want to go then we would buy that many and it's still a home resort. Also, if its only 83 points to stay then that's all we need and it's still a home resort and can book 11 months. If I dont have any AKV points and want to stay there then I use my SSR points and book at the 7 month window. I wish we knew this before we bought 500 points at SSR. We would have bought less SSR and spread it out more. It's so confusing. I now have way too many SSR points, but at least we can use them for one nighters at Grand Californian.....:woohoo:

Not exactly what I was saying.
Let's assume that AKV will cost you 200 pts for your stay. You could buy 100 points at AKV... and reserve a full length stay of 200 points every other year. You could do this by banking and/or borrowing points from other years.
There is also an advantage of having lots of points at a single resort... especially if you like to book longer vacations, or larger units, or both.
