Hello Mouseowners,
I am new to the site and posted my first message yesterday in an attempt to secure a studio rental for my family in February 2009. I received a reply from a supposedly potential renter asking me for 3 references from people I've rented from before. In all of the research I've done before posting, I never once saw mention of DVC members asking "rentees" for references. Has anyone else ever heard of this?
Thanks for the assistance!

Some renters will ask for a reference. I have rented about 10 times the past two years. Only once did someone ask me for a reference, and that was my last renter.
If you have not rented before, just be upfront and try to work with the renter. If it becomes to difficult to work with them, move on and find another person to rent your points.
Good luck! .

There's no reason for him not to ask the same thing of you (or any renter) than you've asked of him. I've read your ad requesting a rental, and it seems to me that your request may have been worded in slightly pricklish terms. After all, it's the renter who is doing you the service, not vice versa.
Another hint: if you are unsure about a renter, why not do a search on that renter: look at how long the renter has been part of our community, how often s/he posts, etc. You can learn a lot that way.
When I first read this post... I thought that there was someone renting out points that was being a bit overzealous. However... I did not go and check it out first hand. After reading the latest reply... I went to check the OP's inquiry, and I started laughing.
I agree that the OP came on a bit stong... but I think he was simply following advice he had received during his research... but blindly did it in a somewhat insensitive manner. It seems to me that the reply he received was just pulling his chain in response.

Hi mcmahons and welcome to MOs!
Disney is making renting points somewhat harder as of late, especially for professional renters (those who rent out thousands of points). Some of these experienced renters are proactively protecting their DVC interests by aksing newbies for referrences. While you the renter take much of the risk in the transaction, the DVC owner also has real and significant risks. (If you trash the room, smoke in the room, default on room charge payments, act poorly at check-in, or broadcast that you rented all over the kingdom). So, if you or anyone else is a newbie here (very low post count) you may/will face a tougher inspection than a regular.
As for the tone in your post, I just see your post as a straight to business, a brass tacks sorta post. Since most of us here are Disney fanatics, that is a bit odd, but I for one didn't take it as prickish. (Of course I still hope to be reinstated at the DIS too, FWIW).
Anyway best of luck! and again welcome! :cheers2:

Sorry everyone! Didn't mean to offend with our original post requesting to rent points! I guess I just wanted to keep it short and sweet so as to avoid any confusion. I may have gotten a little spooked after reading all the do's and don'ts and reading the rules about posts on the DIS boards; they're very specific and threaten to trash your post if you don't do it "just so". Thanks for the advice and I'd welcome any other "words of wisdom". Perhaps I should post a new thread?
Thanks!

Thanks!
Please don't. Just edit your current post. To learn how to do that, click HERE (http://www.mouseowners.com/forums/showthread.php?t=13601). Thanks.

Tony... I think you missed an "L" in the word "pricklish". ;) I had to check a few times when I made my reply. LOL

Tony,
I am not 100% sure either... but I interpreted it as:
- hard to handle
- non-polished
- having an "uninviting" tone

If you don't have a warm fuzzy feeling about the person you are dealing with, move on. There are plenty of people who rent their points, for lots of reasons. There is really no difference if I trade my points through DVC and they rent the unit out to the public or if I rent them directly.
I am a landlord and in the real estate business. I check prospective tenants out but they are long term. A stay for my guest is no different than anyone renting from Disney - we have no control over what Disney let's them do.
Each member has the right to ask for payment in terms that you agree on and both of you have the right to ask for references. Renting directly can save you a ton over going through Disney. But there is a certain amount of trust and risk.
My best advice is NEVER pay for reservations with cash. Use credit cards or paypal so you have some recourse if they don't deliver.
Personally, I ask for credit card number. I don't charge their card until I know the reservation is available. I'm protected because if the charge is declined I can cancel the reservation and my renter is protected because they can challenge the charge and get their money back if I don't deliver the reservation.
