Hello Everyone!
I'm seriously contemplating buying into DVC and have enjoyed browsing this website. I stayed at another timeshare last November but visited Disney Parks five days of my week long trip. While the other 2 BR timeshare was more spacious than some of the Disney 2BR units, it would have been so much nicer, convenient and magical to stay at Disney. I did not enjoy paying for parking five days either.
I'm still undecided to buy resale or direct from Disney. Has anyone ever used renting as means to help pay/offset the purchase cost of a DVC?
This is a great sight and great members! Glad to be a member!

Welcome to MouseOwners!!!!
We have rented excess points to help pay for costs. I am not sure if buying extra points just for rentals if a worthwhile "investment" of money. There are others on this board who rent points as a hobby who can better inform you on this option.

Welcome to MO!!!!!!
Yes, I used renting to offset costs. I rented a couple of reservations per year to offset costs. I would pre-book two popular times of the year and listed those ressies for rent on Ebay/Redweek. I would rent them for a total cost, NOT a per point cost. I would do a direct comparison the the rack rate for that room through CRO. I made sure I came in below what they were asking by a considerable margin. I averaged close to $17 per point using this technique and it was quite profitable.
I posted my profits once after my sale of points on another board a couple of years ago. I had covered above my intial buy in cost for those points. In the end it was pure profit when I sold. Not only were those points free, including dues, but I had made a tidy sum on the appreciation on those points. I made something like $72,000 over 12 years on those. I'll post a recap if anyone cares.
Disclaimer: I cannot say you'd make out as well now. In fact I don't expect any huge price growth if any at all. BUT you can make money renting points, contrary to popular belief.
OH YEAH: BUY a cheap resale at WDW like OKW.

Welcome!!!!!
We rent every year to pay our maintenance fees (works out to renting about 100 points a year). I don't prebook, I usually wait for someone to ask me - or just put a thread in the renting forum. Another easy way to go is to transfer them directly to another member without having to make the reservation. Either way - it's been quite painless, and everyone I've rented to has been fantastic!

Hi Everyone
We have just bought points directly from DVC last week - an impulse buy - didn't do any research at all. We are from the UK - one of my last trips to Florida - about 10 years ago - I was conned into a timeshare presentation. No idea where it was - but I do remember the high pressure sales technique - which was horrid. The price started at $20,000 but time we were leaving it had dropped to $5,000. I regret not buying something at that point - as we would still be enjoying it now. We came into some money just before we came away - and was having a great time spending loads of it on our holiday. I kept seeing the DVC booths - and feeling a bit flush - it got me thinking ( and the most important thing is I could trust Disney). We gave up a precious morning of our 7 day holiday to get the tour - luckily the fastpasses made it worthwhile. We came away with 180 points in ALKV - all my research tells me we have done the right thing. The only thing is I think we might need more points. My gut feeling is to buy 50 resale points somewhere else - with a shorter lifeline (therefore cheaper) - to top up the front end of its lifetime - we are late 40's so we wont get much use ofter we are 70 - although you never know - might be a rollercoastering grannie. I thought this would give us homes in 2 resorts - and the advantages this has - I think - someone please correct me if I have got the wrong end of the stick. With the $ rate for us Brits - the purchase was a no brainer - although one part of me (the accountant part) tells me this is a lot of money to spend in one go - we don't have to borrow - and it does buy us our holidays - for our lifetime. I have been to Disney - either in Florida or Paris 4 times in the last 10 years - so it all makes sense to me. My closest friends live in the US - so it will be perfect as a meeting ground. I think it is something that in 5 years time will feel as if we get free holidays. I like the idea of selling the points to other owners if we have any over - to help cover costs - how does that work? we are very green and still have a lot to learn. Sites such as this help a lot. Could someone please tell me - when I get our points for the year - do they leave our account in the year we book - or the year the holiday is taken - haven't got my head round that yet. I have loads of other questions - which I am sure I will find the answers for her somewhere. One thing I would really love of to get my hands on my of those fastpasses - anyone know how to do this!!

I'm in real estate and DVC is the ONLY time share that I would buy from the developer. I have bought others for as little as $1.00. NOT A TYPO...$1.00.
In 32 years in real estate I've seen A LOT of changes, but the one thing that HAS NOT changed is the three most important factors in real estate are location, location and location. Disney has the location.
Want to rent/exchange a timeshare out someplace else. Possible but not easy. NOT the case with DVC.
I bought a 200 point add on, got 200 current year points to rent plus 275 developer points to use one time so that gave me 475 points to rent. That's $4750 of the purchase price by renting the first year.
Normally, I plan on renting points to just about cover my annual dues.

Hi all, I am new too. Love Disney. I want to learn more about renting also, but I am getting bits and pieces here and there on Mouse Owners.
