I know I've come to the right place for support!:)
Drumroll please......
I've decided I wanted to try to quit smoking..This is a big decision as I have never even WANTED to try to quit.
Step #1- I left my butts in the car this morning and didn't bring them into work with me:faint:
Might not sound like a big step to most of you, but you ex-smokers (or current smokers) know what I mean.
I didn't want to try to quit while I was also trying to lose weight, but now that I am a lifetime WW member, I think I've got that under control enough to try to quit the smoking thing.
Am I crazy to try to quit less than 3 weeks before vacation and 6 weeks before moving????
I figure if I get the Nicorette gum this weekend (that what my dad used and it worked wonders) then I'll already be 2 weeks into the process when I go on vacation.
Thanks for listening:woohoo:
I just realized I meant to put this under the community forum-sorry. Kim ( or whoever) can you move it there for me please??

Hey Athenna,
I'm so proud of you for making that decision! It's a big step, and I'll be rooting for you.
I think anytime is a great time to quit. And just think of all the extra time you'll have on your vacation NOT being in designated smoking areas. You'll probably get an extra ride on Everest out of it.
You can do it!

Deciding to quit is a BIG STEP!!!
Good luck girlie! Let us know how it goes. You know we all support you.
Stay busy. I quit eons ago and the one thing that saved me was staying so busy that I burned up all my excess energy. I was lucky enough that no one around me smoked, so I wasn't constantly bombarded with it after deciding to quit. That helped, but mostly it was just the decision I made...I quit...period...not stopped...not tried to quit...I just quit.
After all the goals you have set for yourself lately (with losing weight being a huge one!) I know you can do this! Just turn your energy towards something other than food and you will do GREAT!!!

Wow! congratulations on the decision!
I quit cold turkey (moved from a smokers kingdom to an environmental paradise, where smoking is considering a very serious punishable crime...)
While I didn't smoke for an extended period, I know that it can be tough. But you have a good support group, by the sounds of it. (just beware those odd dreams where you are just standing around smoking - I'm not the only one who had 'smoke dreams' for years after I quit)
I suggest a little tool that I use when I am tempted to spend money - I calculate the cost in DVC points. A carton of cigarettes for instance costs over 1/2 a point.
Best of luck!!! :blueflowe

Well - I luckily never got started, so I can't speak from personal experience. But my Dad started smoking when he was 12 - and his whole life he struggled trying to quit. I can say - from watching him - the most important thing is never to give up. There may be a slip here and there - but it sounds like you really want this - so I'm sure you'll make it! Just think of how nice it'll be at WDW not having to search out the smoking areas!

Another thing: If you have a bad craving, drink water and breathe in and out real deep two or three times.
I think that the physical cravings are usually over by the end of a couple of weeks. I found the psychological addiction much harder to deal with. I was a smoker and that was part of how I defined myself. It was harder to deal with this than the physical cravings.
I just told myself that on such and such a date, I am not going to smoke anymore. That was it. So far I haven't.
I wish I had as much luck with WW. Congrats on becoming a lifetime member, that is a major accomplishment. Use that same will to do this.
Tammy!

You'll make it!!!!!! If you don't, I'm going to suggest you try my way of quitting: I smoked continually until I made myself :hurl: For real. It was the last time I smoked. Feeling  for two days afterwards was enough to break me.

Half the battle is gaining the desire. The other half, well, when DH quit, it wasen't pretty for sure, but he did it, and he was a full fledge dragon. Wellbutrin helped him. My mom used the gum. Worked for her.

Watched my mom die within 90 days of being diagnosed from lung cancer due to second hand smoke exposure from my dad. She never smoked a day in her life! Reason enough for you to quit?
Lung cancer is a hard one to catch.........by the time you have sx's, it's really bad.
Had to be such a fatalist, but that story should make anyone stop and smell the fresh air.

Dont be silly! Anything you need to talk about, you know we are all here to listen. It IS hard to quit. You didn't learn to smoke in a day, you can't just unlearn it in a day either!
I will tell you the day I was glad I quit. It didn't have to do with being healthier, although I could tell I felt better. It didn't have to do with the money saved, although I saved a bunch...
It was the day I had gone out drinking with some friends about 6 months after I quit. (Not a biggie at that point as I had been out many times before with them after I quit and I could handle that side of things) The next day I went to do laundry and the smell of my clothing from the night before actually caused me to gag. I wasn't hung over. Heck, I hadn't even smoked myself, just been around it the night before. It was then that I realized that I used to SMELL like that ALL THE TIME!!! I am not a person big on vanity, but it truly bothered me and I was so glad that I would never smell like that because I smoked EVER AGAIN! When I smoked, I never noticed it, but ick!
My mother in law smokes. Every package that we get from her house reaks. I am not telling you this to be curel or mean but who wants to stink?!?!?!
Good luck Athenna!

I am practically in tears reding all of your wonderful replies!
I've done really well so far, as I mentioned, I left my butts in the car today so I didn't smoke all day at work. So when I left work, I decided I'd smoke 1 cigarette and it would be my last one. Well, I didn't enjoy it, and didn't even smoke half of it, drove right away to CVS and bought the nicorette gum, and had my 1st piece while I was grocery shopping. The tough part will be after eating dinner and having my coffee, but I am strong, I shall persevere!!!!

Athenna! It just goes to show how addictive that nicotene is. Man, this is one big step for you. And we're all pullin' for you. Being an ex-smoker, it's probably one of the hardest things to do. But when you look back, you'll know what a wise decision it was.
Here in Illinois, they just passed a bill that adds an extra dollar in taxes to each pack of cigarettes. So I think they're up to about $7.85 a pack. You can buy a lot of souvenirs at WDW for that kind of money.
Just keep on saying to yourself that you are definitely strong enough to conquer this addiction.

Another thought - smoking at work is often a social habit as well as a physical one. ('Hanging out with the cool kids....' ;) )
If that's the case for you, then find something else to do on your breaks at work. Read a book, go for a walk, talk to some new folks, etc etc etc. Anything to break that routine of going to hang out for a smoke
And if you DO need to hang out with the cool kids, you can always come visit us here!

I did get about 3 and 1/2 hours sleep and I do hope to try to go back soon.
Gotta get up early today, gotta get out of work early, to take dad back to the doctors (he hasn't improved much). So see, if I waited until a less stressful time to quit smoking, I'd have probably smoked forever:mad:

Just so you know the gum may be keeping you awake somewhat.
I quit years ago (23). The thing that worked for me was putting off the cigarette that I wanted. After a day or two I realized that if I had cigarette, I'd have to start quitting all over again. However, I did it it worked for me. Maybe that will help you too.
Just one other thing....
Please understand that you will probably always have cravings. Even now I get them. The thing that you need to keep in mind is that once you stop smoking you can't go back. Yes you will want to. Just don't. Think about the struggle you are facing now, do you want to do that again? Yes there are a few people who can but most cannot and it is the thing that gets them every time....do you want to be one of them?
Sorry if it sounds like I'm lecturing but I know so many people that think they'll just have one and wind up going back to it.
My mother died two and half years ago from smoking. She had COPD. In the end she suffocated pure and simple. Her days were spent struggling to breathe. I know she did not ever envision such a horrible death for herself and if she had she would have quit cold turkey. I'm just glad I quit smoking when I did.
Thanks, that's what I did today! Instead of the usual going to smoke on break, I came here to see what all of you were up to:flowerfor

Atheena, my Daddy smoked unfiltered Camels. His civilian job took him to Viet Nam, and while there he sufferd his first heart attack. The Drs. told him he had to quit smoking if he wished to live. His desire for cigarettes won, and Daddy died at 49. I was only 21. That was back in 1972. To this day I have never understood how the cigarettes won out over his family.

I really don't give a hoot what my butt looks like in a swimsuit. Really. My butt is actually somebody else's problem. I don't have to look at it....so why do I want to know what it looks like? Besides....those flourescent lights are BRUTAL. Rant over. I don't want to see myself from behind...I'm trying to look forward....look to the future! Do NOT look back :hyper: .

Well, I'm actually chewing less than they recommend (can you imagine how I'd be if I was chewing the amount recommended?:holymoly: )
They recommend for the 1st 6 weeks, 1 piece every 1-2 hours, and I'm actually chewing much less than that.
jnrrt
02-16-2006, 12:59 PM
Hey athenna,
I've never done this, so take anything I say with a huge grain of salt. Are you using the nicorette when you think you really need it, or because you think you should chew it? I'm just agreeing that it makes me nervous to have you sick and stuff all the time. Maybe less is more?
I also wanted to say that I'm sure it won't be like this all the time. I know that several years ago I quit caffeine totally because my dd was nursing and couldn't handle ANY - one piece of chocolate and she was up doing what nono's dd is doing (hey, nono, :grouphug: , I really think the hardest thing about kids is when you get no sleep). I know when I quit that, I was sleepy for quite a while, and concerned that that wouldn't change, but as my body adjusted, I've had no problem at all. In fact, I think I wake up more easily now, and if I have caffeine, it has a much bigger effect on me than before. Although, I can eat chocolate now:lovestruc .
So I think this is just your body adjusting to the change in chemicals. It'll smooth out, and you're going through the worst part of it now, so just hang on, and it'll get better.
I for one, think you're doing awesome. This is such a hard habit to break - just keep on keeping on!

The nicotine in the Nicorette gum is the same stimulant that was in your dreaded cigarettes. If you are that hyper, it surely is because you are getting more nicotine than you are used to. Also, keep in mind that the recommendation may be the same for a 200 lb fella as you:jawdroppi I think you could tailor your use to what works best for you:blueflowe I only say this because I'm your caring internet friend:solikeiwa :sunny:

I didn't do ANY exercisse at all yesterday per our little agreement. Can't promise I will double up today, but I'll try.
Someone mentioned that your reactions might be your bodies way of cleansing itself of toxin. And while that may or may not be true, if you think of it that way,

I believe it will help to minimize the discomfort.
My X took niacin, (nicotinic acid) to help reduce cholestral. And he would have severe flushing (not the toilet, but his face...tho thinking about his face IN the toilet just made me smile) after taking it. And I'm sure he had heart palpatations too. I think that gum is giving you a high dose of concentrated adrenyline pumping drug....so you be careful, ok?????

Athenna, I haven't had much time reading the boards lately so I missed this post until today. Congratulations on making the decision to quit! I wish you the best. Of course since you are a lifetime WW member, you are already my idol. I did really well until our Disney cruise last Sept. Ever since then DH and I cannot get back into the swing of things. Did you find that keeping the weight off after you lost it was as hard as you thought it would be? During my 1st stretch of WW I lost 40 pounds. I didn't exercise at all during that time. I'm really going to try hard to start walking in the morning with a friend of mine. We decided that after we drop our kids off at school we are going to walk at least a couple of days a week. Anyway, enough about the diet program, best of luck with the quitting smoking program. Both of my parents smoked while I was growing up. I HATED IT. After I went off to college it really bothered me. I would take all my laundry home and wash it, and then return to college. When I would open up my suitcase, my clothes would reak!:burningma I would have to go wash them all again in the pay laundry mat. When I was a couple of years into college, my Mom had to have her gallbladder removed. She was so sick from the surgery that she could not smoke. So she basically quit cold turkey after 20+ years. My Dad had quintuple bypass surgery 2 years ago at the age 58, his doctor told him that If he didn't quit smoking he wasn't going to live many more years. I think he still smokes on occasion. Hopefully he will kick it before it's too late. You have already accomplished so much with your weightloss, just think if you quit smoking you'll be a picture of health!

Thanks for the kind words, Erin. Gee, I hope your folks get well, very soon!
Honestly, I have found so far that it is harder to maintain the weight loss than to lose the weight to begin with. I think it has a lot to do w/the mental aspects of it. iN my 3 trips to WDW since I've been on WW, the 2 before I became lifetime 1) stayed the same 2) actually lost a pound. The 1 trip since becoming lifetime, netween that and X-mas, I gained 6.5:crazy: which is really bad for me. ( I have since lost 4.5 of it though)
Sorry, for the rambling, again, but since I quit the butts, I type/talk way to much..lol

Islept pretty well last night, actually. I think I was so tired from the weekend.
But I have already had 2 pieces of Nicorette this morning cause I am stressed out. Dad is home waiting for the plumber. I think there is a leak somewhere??? Maybe from the condo below us??? There is a stretch of (brand new) carpet in my condo that is soaking wet and will not dry no matter what I do. Gotta get it fixed or that couple is not going to buy my condo and there goes buying my new townhouse out the window. Sick of spending money on the house I am trying to leave, would rather spend it on getting the new house ready. But if the leak is from the person below, they should be required to get the plumber in there and pay for it to get fixed, correct??
Thanks for letting me ramble again.

Nope, haven't talked to anyone yet since it just happened. But I know from past experiences w/various things throughout the years that talking to the condo people is useless. They just say, well, call a plumber, they aren't responsible for anything inside the condo.

I'm off today with a sick son so I decided to catch up on your progress. Seems to me quitting while going through all these stressful times is a great testament to your will power and determination. Keep up the good work. My money's on you!

Thanks gang!
Well, made it through 11 days and counting, so far so good!:cheerlead
Tomorrow night may be rough, but I can do it. I have a friend that moved to Vermont and he is coming back home to visit family & friends for the week, and a bunch of us are all getting together tomorrow night at the local watering hole. None of the guys smoke, but most of the girls do, usually we would all go out to puff together and have girl chat. But I am confident in my non-smoking abilities, that if I want to go outside w/them for some girl chat, that they can puff if they want to and I will just chew my gum and be happy! And my other half is joining us when he gets out of work, and he is my sponsor ( joined an on-line support website and you have to pick a sponsor to keep you motivated) so I'll make it:cheerlead

Well, it is 2:54 am and I am wide awake so I guess I spoke too soon on how well the sleeping thing is going. I slept fine all week. But tonight I have gotten a whopping 1 hour of sleep so far and I have a ton of things to do tomorrow (actually today, huh?) including working, I had been looking for overtime and they approved me 10 hours for the weekend so I'm gonna do 5 & 5. And I have normal Saturday errands to run, and dinner and drinks w/friends, so another late night and then I get to work again tomorrow and finish whatever errands that I am too darn tired to finish today.
I just am so looking forward to ME pulling up to SSR in 8 days, that's when I will feel all the stress leave my body:sunny:
Sorry for the exhausted ramblings.
Athenna,
Hang in there -- that's why this thread is here! :lovestruc

Well, I made it through my night out last night. I was so worried about being tempted around all the smokers. I didn't need to worry. One of my good friends (who I hadn't seen in a long time) came out w/us last night and she and I were always like double trouble:hyper: smoking, drinking, partying, etc. So I was concerned I would want to smoke the second I saw her...lol...Ummmm, boy can people change. She quit smoking 6 weeks ago, runs 5 miles a day, and joined the Army, is leaving for boot camp in April. WOW.
the sleeping is so-so, last night was a late night out so I only got 4 hours sleep, but at least it was a consecutive 4 hours.

Well, if I didn't smoke yesterday, then I am stronger than I thought!:kickingco
15 days and counting:)
Everything was fine until dad called me at 12:30 to say he had been vommiting since 11:00. I thought maybe he had the stomach bug that has been going around here lately. He had a check-up scheduled for 3pm w/his doctor anyway. He called doctor, he said come in right away. So I left work, picked up dad went to the doctor's where we waited and waited for the doctor. In the mean time now he isn't vommiting any more, just kinda spitting up (sorry if it is TMI) doctor orders bloodwork, so we go to the lab. Then he orders a CT scan for today, so we drive to the hospital to get some crap he has to drink before the test today. Then I didnt sleep great so I got to work today 2 hours early, but that ok, cause I got to make up at least 5 hours for yesterday & today. Then I went out furniture shopping because I need to get something accomplished for the new house before I go away. UGH, I'm tired and drained.
Thanks for letting me ramble AGAIN

Thanks again, gang!
Well, dad had his CT Scan today. He felt good all day. When we left the hospital, he says ''gee, i feel great, if we were all packed, I want to leave for WDW right now'':hyper: So I felt pretty hopeful about that. When I went back to work, he called me to tell me he threw up his lunch. But he has felt fine since, he ate dinner and had no problems at all and feels fine now. Oh boy, this should be an interesting vacation.
Still can't believe I quit smoking during all of this commotion. :cheerlead

Ugh...I know for sure my old self would be smoking a butt right about now. Of course I don't think my old self would be up at 2:00am for no reason. I thought by now the sleeping would be back to normal, but alas, not the case. I am so sleepy as I have been working a lot. but not getting enough sleep. I am even working tomorrow for a while when I should be getting a haircut and finsih packing, etc. I hope I can sneak in a nap tomorrow too, otherwise I might sleep through vacation...lol..:catchingz :catchingz :catchingz :catchingz

Well, I made it through my 1st month:clappingh
It wasn't always easy. I thought it would be easy while I was in WDW, but it was actually tougher than I thought. Especially in Epcot while having an adult beverage.
But as I mentioned when I returned, I did slip up once. I wanted to confess the story (hope it doesn't bore you all to tears:hahahaha: )
I was stressed from dad not feeling well, and I was mad at myself for screwing up 2 dining ressies and getting the EMH backwards. Fri night (now knowing thats really when EMH @ Epcot was) I went to stroll WS by myself ( dad was too tired at that time of night) 1st stop margarita in Mexico :dancingba
2nd stop-smoking spot in Norway:tsktsk: where I bummed a cig from a lady who had been there all day w/newbies and was finally getting a chance to relax. She said that if I was going to be there until midnight, I'd need more butts and she gave me 3. I insisted 1 was fine, but she insisted to take the 3. So I did but planned on having 1 and throwing out the other 2 but alas, I smoked them all. Have had no desire to smoke since.
In fact, I went outside on break w/a co-worker today who I always took butt breaks with, and I couldn't believe I could smell the smoke in the smoking area, I'd never noticed it before. But I wasn't tempted, I needed to do it, I can't avoid my friends that smoke.
Thanks for reading and for your continued support:hug:

Even though this is old news, I thought I'd give it a ''bump'' cause I am 8 weeks into this no smoking thing. I am proud of myself for doing it, but gosh, it's still hard! I am still chewing this gum like there is no tomorrow.
And trying to not smoke and maintain my weight loss at the same time is trickier than I thought!

My hat is off to you, Athenna! I pray that you keep at it for your health's sake:loveisint It is harder to maintain weight because it is a fact that you will burn approximately 10% less calories after quitting! That is why many women don't stay quit.
You can do it!!!!

I came to confess my sins.
I cheated, I had not 1 but 2 cigarettes today. Big broo haha at work today. 5 of us were told we have to leave our current positions and go back to our old building. I will be going to back to the entry level position I started at almost 10 years ago here. The main thing is, I have a job. I am so greatful that I do. I have just worked really hard in this company and it stinks the things they do. So I was stressed and smoked.:sosad:
