Just want to make everyone aware of a recent technicality that I have been made aware of regarding DVC referral rewards.

I have referred people to DVC in the past and received the reward. Its not like I agressively do this, but I do talk up DVC to people I think would benefit from it.

Last year, a friend of mine was at Disney and I was talking to him and he said he was going on a DVC tour. I told him use my name as a referral if he buys. He did use my name and did buy. I never heard from DVC regarding the referral reward and honestly never thought about it again. ($200 is not the end of the world)

Now just a couple of weeks ago a friend of mine and DW from college is at Disney and takes the tour and decides to buy into DVC. The guide askes them if they know any memebers ( I assue for the referral discount, if that still applies, but I have no idea) and she gives them out name. The bought and everything is fine.

This gets my DW wondering about the referral I first mentioned. She calls our guide and he tells her that these people went on a tour a year before they went on the tour that they mentioned our name and actually bought, so the referral rewards are not given. Ok, so my wife askes about our friend who just bought, and he said that they had requested a package directly from DVC before vacation and therefore DVC considered them a direct contact and not a referral so no go there either for us. Now our guide was real nice about it and said we could have our friend call her guide she bought from and try to get us the referral, but I don't really want to have this person go crazy, so I will probably drop it.

I don't mean to complain, and the $400 of Disney dollars would have been nice, but no big deal in the long run, so I am not terribly upset and I also have never read the fine print regarding the referral rewards anyway because as I said I am not out there hunting for people because I do not believe it is for everyone.

I guess I just wanted to sound off and let others out there know that if you have a friend that is considering DVC, make sure they mention your name first before any other communication with DVC, otherwise it woudl seem no referral applies. Also, anyone have any idea why a guide would ask a buyer if they know any members (and this was not just a casual question, but something that she apparently marked down) if DVC is so strick on the giving fo the referral?

My experience with referrals was a little different. Twice in the last year I gave my name out to people who had already contacted DVC. They were trying to decide whether or not to buy and when I told them about the extra incentives if they were referred by a member they both called their guides and gave them my referral. Both of them bought and I got the referral bonus. I don't know if the extra referral incentive was the reason they bought, but I don't think it hurt.

Does anyone know how this works? Who pays the referral bonus? Do the guides work on comission (I assume so, but I've never really asked)? Do they lose commission on a referral? I do know that the first referral came through much faster than the second one did. In fact my Disney Visa for referral number 2 was delivered today! Methinks it will go towards my spa and adult beverage bill on my upcoming cruise. :innocent:

This is why I don't push sales at Work either.

They always have some type of loophole to get away with out giving you your money. So now I make the Sales reps earn their money and if someone interested I just give them a list a questions to ask.

I gave a family some great info and my card ( the ones they sent out) they did the tour I got thank you for refering ( from an E-mail) and it's pending and then never heard another word. Matter of fact I have never heard a word from either of my 2 Guides I have had.

We had a tour booked but did a Phone buy because of the ending of the F&F discount was close to the dates and we wanted to make sure we got in at that price. Well our guide didn't even want to give us the tour 3 week later when we were on sight. New one just sends us the junk to help them sell or add-on but never heard from him.

The rules on the DVC web site just state:

"Introduced Guest" is an individual who satisfies all of the following conditions: (a) the Introduced Guest's purchase of an Ownership Interest from DVD in a DVC Resort is Complete; (b) the Introduced Guest must mention that they were introduced by an Introducing Member and provide DVD with the name of the Introducing Member before their own purchase of an Ownership Interest is Complete; and (c) the Introduced Guest cannot be an existing Member.

Sounds like you qualify.

We had stopped at one of the booths in WDW to inquire about DVC the year prior to us actually buying. The next year we went and took the tour. Our guide asked if we knew any DVC members because there was a good incentive if we did. We said we knew a member. He saw in our file that we had already inquired about DVC the year before and that there was not a referring member mentioned then. He left for a few minutes and fixed it so we would got the incentive & our DVC referring friend received his reward.
Could it have to do with how the guide handled it?

When my parents went to buy last year and used us as a referral, we were also told no since they asked for a info packet back when OKW was just in development stages! So yes, they do keep all that info on file forever it seems. :bugeyed:

We did get around it though because my father was the one who originally requested the info 15 yrs ago and my mother was the one that purchased in her name only this past year. :innocent:

I'd like to compliment your easy going nature BUT you are owed that referral money and it is a shame you haven't received it. Disney is making a fortune off of these sales so a $200 thank you is nothing to them not to mention it is good business.

I know you don't want to bother with this but $400 would sure be nice on your next trip to spend, besides it is the principle of the thing. At least consider making another call and speaking to a higher up not your guide.

Atleast you get the referal bonus we have refered about 10 people and being in Canada we get a nice letter that says thanks and that is it.

Alright you have convinced me to go forego my happy go lucky attitude towards this and give the guide another call. He said he has a phone call and an email into someone who apparently can fix this. I am usually not so indifferent about $$, must be the 10 days to our BWV trip has me not thinking clearly!

Thanks for the replies. I will keep you posted.

Not all members can get the referral money anyway. I'm in MN and the way the law is written, even if I refer someone, legally, DVC can't give me the money. It's a major bummer.

That is unfortuante. That is not a problem here in NY. You can always give them my name...oh, wait, I forgot I am on a do not pay list, so that may not be a good idea.......

I live in Pennsylvania, and Pennsylvania says we can't get referral awards from DVC either. But I have gotten some nice "thank you" letters from my guide for referring people.

UPDATE: I just (on a whim based on another thread I read here regarding the referrals being on dvcmember.com) checked out the member website and at one of my rewards was on there!

This must the one from a few years back, as the new one I know for a fact did not close yet. Thanks for everyone for your help, I owe you all a drink at F&W where I will be using my new found $200 at each kiosk! (Isn't it great how they are just going to get the money back, simply genius..some might even call it magic..:innocent:)

My mom initially took the tour in 2002, during our first ever trip to the world.

She didn't buy, but DH and I did after looking over the info she had received and researching it to death on the net.
Fast forward to 2006.
Mom went to take the tour again, along with my BIL.
She bought and I got a $100 gift card as a thank you. Was that a referrel incentive?
