Pastor wins years of vacations
By ELIZABETH HOCHSTEDLER elizabeth.hochstedler@lee.net
The Rev. Ken Edenhauser just happened to stop by his house quickly Monday when the phone rang.
He picked up, not realizing Regis and Joy Philbin would be on the other end.
Edenhauser, the pastor of St. John’s Lutheran Church in Cornell, won a membership in the Disney Vacation Club Monday morning on the syndicated television show.
The prize includes a vacation each year for the next 49 years to one of the over 500 Disney resorts.
“I knew the drawing was going to be today, but there were so many people that I didn’t think I had a chance,” Edenhauser said.
He entered himself into the “Live with Regis and Kelly” show’s “Travel Trivia” contest months ago.
Edenhauser was on the show via telephone in January, and his name was entered with 103 more into the grand prize drawing.
On Monday morning, Regis and Joy, who was filling in for Kelly Ripa, picked the name of the winner, who happened to be Edenhauser.
The names had been placed in ice cubes.
“Regis Philbin’s wife picked my ice cube out, and Regis smashed it,” Edenhauser said Monday afternoon. “Then I talked to them on the phone this morning.”
Even though Edenhauser and his wife Mary watch the beginning of the show almost every morning, the call was a surprise to Edenhauser because the show airs locally at 9 a.m., an hour after it is taped in New York.
After finding out he had won, Edenhauser casually told his wife he knew who had won the contest.
She assumed he had looked on the Internet, but he revealed to her that he had been called.
“She was surprised, too, and happy,” Edenhauser said. “(She) is looking forward to the vacations.”
Representatives from the show will be mailing the details of the prize to Edenhauser within the next few days.
He would like to figure out the part about the 49 years because at 64 years old, he’s not sure he has another 49 years left.
“They asked how old I was, and I said 64, and they laughed, of course, because the prize is for 49 years,” Edenhauser said.
He’s not sure when he’ll be able to take the vacations since his job as a pastor keeps him busy, but he hopes to find time in his schedule.
“I’m not retired, so I can’t just take off three months out of the year,” he said.
In the hours since he won the prize, Edenhauser has become sort of a local celebrity.
“It’s amazing how many people watched it,” he said. “A number of people that saw it called me.”
Edenhauser also made sure he taped the show, so he can watch it again. That is, when he’s not off on a Disney vacation.
