Are the tips "required" for each employee (ex. server) by the Cruiseline, or is it voluntary. We have been on ships where the amount is automatically charged to your account.

Tips are optional. You can have them billed to your account if you want to, but you can also choose to use the envelopes they provide and just put cash in them.

There are suggested amounts - i believe they leave envelopes and card with the suggested breakdown before your last night of the cruise. If you don't charge your tips, but sure to get them to your servers by your last dinner. You may not have them at breakfast the next day, or you may not want to eat breakfast in the restaurants before you disembark.
