View Full Version : Best Breakfast Splurge

This morning CNN has a piece in their travel section about the best breakfast spots around the country. Which got me to thinking (A dangerous thing to be sure)

The four of us don't often do a sit down meal, too busy doing the commando style trip still. But the day we check out we often don't leave until late and have a few hours to kill. Sometimes breakfast can be the best meal of the day when we're travelling. You know, fill the belly up and sit on a plane sipping water for the rest of the day.

But the choices are endless. Should we choose a big sumptuous trough meal, a fun-filled character meal, a light and wistful leasurely pool-side meal, a grab-and-stroll muffin and shopping meal?

So, if/when you have a few hours to kill and you're looking for your ideal time-to-kill breakfast where do you go and why?

We like Ohana, Chef Mickeys and Cape May.

I think I prefer Ohana and Cape May the best. Ohana is family style, it has Stitch and the pineapple bread is soooooooooooo sooooooooooo soooooooooo good :)

I like Cape May as it is buffet and its a very open atmosphere and they also have quite a bit of fresh fruit, which I like.

Hubby loves Chef Mickey's. It is a requirement for each trip - I kid you not. He doesn't care where we eat as long as Chef Mickey's is on the list.

We hav alway enjoyed Donald's Breakfastasaurus at the AK. You may not be able to go or want to go to a park just for breakast though. Chef Mickey's is great as well.

We don't do breakfast out often, but we did hit the buffet at Cape May and it was excellent. Best character meal we've ever done.

For a bit of character with a lighter price tag, try the Grosvenor Hotel's breakfast with Pluto and Sleuth Goofy (the Hounds of Baskerville Goofy - I am sure he has an official name, but I dont know it). You can choose from a "cold" breakfast with plenty of pastries and cereals (for $7 or so) or a hot breakfast that I want to say was $10 each - buffet style. Adult prices. My sons enjoyed it and we didn't have that crush and rush feel of a typical WDW breakfast and had GREAT character interaction.

So far, my favorite is CP. I just loved the food and the look of the place. My second love is Kona's Cafe...great breakfast food at the Poly. I haven't tried O'Hana's or Cape May yet.

Hi,

Boatwrights @ POR or BOMA. Cape May & WCC are good choices too. Enjoy!

We haven't done too many breakfasts yet (CP,CRT, CM, Epcot Princess) so don't have a lot to go on but for our family we *have* to do CP. We just love it. If you don't have to worry about the price of admission that might be fun have breakfast and go a couple cute easy (non popular) rides. One last taste of Disney before your trip home.

On our last day of our upcoming trip we are planning to have a later breakfast at Ohana and hang at the Poly.

Since you're asking about the "last day" I guess my inclination would be to avoid the parks and aim for a resort - something I could hit on my way out that would be nice, but not make me TOO wistful that I was leaving, LOL! Maybe check out a resort you haven't seen or at least, not in a long time! We sometimes like to visit the resort we plan to go to on our next trip - sort of a "prelude" that then makes us think NOT of our current trip ending, but of how our NEXT trip will start! (For example, we're doing OKW this time, so perhaps on our last morning, we will go over to Cape May for b'fast since we plan to stay in BCV on the next trip...)

My SIL and I had a nice brunch over at Grand Floridian Cafe' on one trip. We have also done Olivia's before on the day we were leaving - very nice. If I were inclined to do a character b'fast for one last fling, I would probably opt for Cape May. Good character interaction, relaxed setting, and those crepe thingys they have there (blintzes?) are to die for! If the weather is nice, it might be great to just get a table out on the Boardwalk and get something from Boardwalk bakery, then walk around the Boardwalk a bit afterwards - I did this once while in Orlando on business and really enjoyed the spring morning and quiet time (and the view was so nice, too!) Felt like I had the place to myself, in many ways!

The gopher is very convincing. Scratch my idea about CP and MK. Bad idea. Bad, Bad idea. It would be hard to get to the airport on time! And planes don't wait for one more ride on splash mountain! Go with a resort breakfast, characher meal if possible, at a resort you like. They have Lilo and Sitch at Ohana for breakfast now that might be a nice choice with a little sit on the beach and view of MK before you leave.

We have also done CapeMay which we enjoyed, but the absolute best food we have had a breakfast was the buffet at 1900 park faire. It had pooh, alice, mad hatter, and Mary Poppins. We had a late breakfast and didn't need to eat again until dinner.

I really enjoyed Ohana's for breakfast. We had a window seat with a nice view of Seven Seas Lagoon & MK.
Crystal Palace was great. The Breakfast Lasagna is the all time greatest breakfast food created.

I tried Cape May recently with two friends (we often breakfast together). We all thought that it was a great meal - good selection on the buffet, and great character interaction.

Personally, I like the peacefulness of breakfast on the patio at Olivia's, but for a more social event I would definitely do Cape May again.

Our absolute favorite breakfast spot is Spoodles. The frittatas and egg rotollos are to die for. I've also enjoyed Mickey waffles and a really yummy French toast there. Oh, and come to think of it I've also tried the breakfast pizza.

One of favorite parts of Spoodles for breakfast besides the actual food is the alcoholic drinks! LOL I always get a mimosa and DH swears by their bloody marys! There is something different about them than anywhere else we've had these drinks...and they are HUGE!

The Breakfast Lasagna is the all time greatest breakfast food created.
If you want to make it on your own:
Breakfast Lasagna
From the Crystal Palace – Magic Kingdom

TIP – make the pastry cream the day before – assembly is nothing at all and you can use frozen waffles and pancakes [frozen fruit too]. I doubled the recipe and used a large Lasagna Pan.

Ingredients – Make the pastry cream first

1.5 tsps vanilla extract
6 egg yolks
1.5 cups milk
¼ tsp salt
¼ c all-purpose flour
¾ cup sugar

In a 2 quart saucepan, combine sugar, flour, salt and milk over medium heat and cook stirring until mixture thickens. In small bowl with a fork, beat egg yolks slightly, beat small amount of milk mixture into yolks. Slowly pour egg mixture back into milk mixture. Stirring constantly, cook over medium low heat until mixture thickens. Remove from heat and stir in vanilla extract. Chill cream until ready to use.

Assembly – Ingredients

6 pancakes
6 waffles
1 pound strawberries
8 oz of blueberries [you can also use raspberries]

Put a thin layer of pastry cream in a pan, make a layer of waffles, put a layer of paystry cream. Cut strawberries into slices. Take half the strawberries and half the blueberries and make a layer of fruit. Top the fruit with a layer of pancakes, then layer of pastry cream. Garnish the lasagna with the rest of the strawberries and blueberries.

Bake in a 350 degree oven for 20 minutes

Serves 5

Recipe is courtesy of my good friends Jody and Tony!

For you CP experts - My DH and two boys went to CP last trip while I took dd and my sis and her dds to CIndy's for breakfast. Later that week, on a Mom/dd day at MK, I took dd to CP for lunch.

We are *thinking* about doing CP for dinner. How does it compare to their other meals? Better? Worse?

I had wanted to do CP for bfast, thinking about that b'fast lasagna... I think I had that recipe in a Mickey/Disney cook book, CRNDSNY, and have never made it, and just sort of forgot I had the recipe, LOL! Now that I've seen your note it has reminded me and by golly, I may just have to give it a shot! The waffles and pancakes - do you de-frost or cook them first, or just lay 'em in there stiff and frozen?

I've only ever done dinner at CP, so I can't compare it for you. :(

My friend Jody likes to make that lasagna for Christmas morning. It is a tradition in their house. I will try it one of these days!

BOMA'S, hands down. The huge variety and the quality of the food, along with the $16 price tag makes this our all time favorite breakfast spot. Then if you have any time to spare, talk to a guide outside and they'll give you the most extensive tour of the hotel, showing you all the vantage points for animal viewing, some only accesssed to cast members. Ask for Keutsa, she was wonderful!

Just for a different idea - the most relaxing morning of departure I've ever had - and good food to boot - was when we decided to make a simple but yummy breakfast in out room and eat it on our patio while the kids fed the ducks in their pajamas! (OKW) I got to sip coffee, read a Disney magazine, look through our digital pics from the trip..... It wasn't elaborate - but we hadn't taken the time to do that all week, it was wonderful!

Haven't eaten breakfast at Kona's or Boatwrights...but is the stuffed banana french toast roughly the same?

BTW, How late is that departure? If it is afternoon, you might combine a lazy morning sipping coffee and feeding those PJ wearing ducks with an afternoon tea (that actually starts by 11) at the GF for something different.

Mattysgramma and I have ressies for afternoon tea at the GF our FIRST DAY.

Ooooooooo...afternoon tea sounds interesting. Never knew about that. Thanks for the idea.

In general we shoot for early afternoon departures, but we are always thinking that if we just took an evening flight (its only about 3hrs. afterall) we could fill the day with lounging around and visiting and/or eating in places we never get to.

I've never set foot in the GF, believe it or not, and this might be a good reason to.

I really like GF's 1900 park fare breakfast with Mary Poppins best. I haven't tried Chef Mickey's but it's on the agenda for our trip in March. Cape May's is nice and rather relaxed for a buffet.
