This just in (from my Passporter newsletter):
Speaking of name changes, Walt Disney World has announced that they're changing the "Disney Vacation Club Resorts" lodging category in brochures, marketing materials, etc. to Disney Deluxe Villa Resorts. Disney is not changing anything about Disney Vacation Club (DVC), or the status of those resorts (Old Key West, BoardWalk Villas, Wilderness Lodge Villas, Beach Club Villas, Saratoga Springs Resort, and Animal Kingdom Lodge Villas). Rather, Disney wants to communicate that anybody can reserve a villa, not just DVC members. This has always been true, but judging by the questions and comments we receive, the change a few years ago from "Home-Away-From-Home Resorts" to "Disney Vacation Club Resorts" did create some confusion.

I guess I see their point, but I don't know if I like it from an owner's standpoint. They don't care what I think anyway though.

I don't like it. It doesn't have a ring to it and says nothing about membership.... But as said before, it's not like they will care what I think.....

This was actually posted on the DVC Members site in the "News/What's New" section of the site. Seems like Disney has been making some effort to try to apeal to the general public as a viable resort instead of just a DVC opportunity. Of course we all know once you stay at one of the DVC resorts, you can call it whatever you like, but it will always be "Welcome Home".
Resorts debut new category name
Beginning on Aug. 16, Guests shopping for Walt Disney WorldŽ accommodations will discover a "new" category of resorts.
In an effort to alleviate confusion about the availability of Disney Vacation Club accommodations as nightly rentals, and to better describe these resorts' amenities, Disney vacation planners will use the term Disney Deluxe Villa Resorts in reference to the Disney Vacation Club properties for non-Members. (These resorts previously were listed as Disney Vacation Club Resorts.)
The Disney Deluxe Villa Resorts category tops off a line-up of Disney Resorts for every taste and budget, including Disney Value Resorts, Disney Moderate Resorts and Disney Deluxe Resorts.
As this resort category name change affects Guest rental bookings only, Disney Vacation Club Members will continue to know these properties as Disney Vacation Club Resorts.

I see their point. In principle, it doesn't bother me, but I wonder if they are trading one confusion in for another. I can see people saying "I stayed in the deluxe villas, but where's the DVC resort so many people keep talking about?"

well comparing a 1, 2 or 3 bedroom DVC to a room at any of the deluxes.
yea it should be Disney delxue villa resorts.
some people were avoiding them because they though they would be less than a deluxe or even moderate. since they are better - the name should reflect that.

Guess I've known that you could always pay cash for a stay at DVC but never really considered folks do it. So at what time frame do they start being able to make reservations?? Do they get the same 7 month window owners get at a non-owned resort??

You may remember that some of the references to the soon to be built building on the Contemporary Resort property, were referred to as "villas" rather than DVC. I think we have an answer. It IS going to be DVC, it is just the upcoming name change that led to the confusion. ( A confusion that Disney was happy to use to keep us wondering.) :kickingco

It's an apples and oranges kind of comparison. Cash ressies at DVC resorts are made out of inventory owned by Disney itself, or are the equivalent of points used for Cruises, Adventures by Disney, DL hotel ressies, and trades out through Interval International (and other trades). For instance, DVC"pays" DCL for your cruise by renting your points out.
There is something of accounting "black magic" at work, because there is no real booking window---it's up to the Disney accountants to figure out what inventory and points are being used. Haven't had it happen to me, but I know others have been frustrated that rooms that are not available on points are sometimes available through cash.

Is it black magic, or is it a case where Disney can use my points under the terms of their use year if I trade them out? In other words, if I use 100 Aug '07 use year points at SSR for a cruise, is Disney then limited to bookingaccommodations based on the terms of those 100 Aug '07 points? ( 11 mos at SSR, and 7 mos elsewhere?)

Yes, I agree, I think this is why they changed it. Many people think Deluxe resorts are "Better" than DVC.

Honestly don't know, Dirk. I think that their retained inventory is so large it kind of gets lost in translation for those of outside the process. I think in terms of the rules of the "condominium" the booking windows may be true, but there are slices of every resort DVD never declared into the condominiums and they might "swap" units back and forth, so to speak. Say we're talking about "unit x" at OKW owned by DVD and never declared part of the DVC condominium... Disney CRO could rent that to me 14 months out, then when member tradepoints come available from "unit y" at the 11 or 7 month window, Disney swaps my reservation to unit y and then goes forth and re-rents unit x.
To say that I am way out in speculation land here would be an understatement.:teacher:

The WDW Resort overview web page (http://disneyworld.disney.go.com/wdw/resorts/resortOverview?id=ResortOverviewPage) already reflects this change, and the DVC resorts are at the top of the list.
