Point Transfers

DVC points may be transferred from one owner to another, one contract to another within a single Use Year.  Transfers most frequently occur when points are rented by another DVC member, when a single owner wishes to move points from multiple contracts to a single contract, or when friends / family members pool points from different contracts for the purpose of making a single reservation.

There are a number of guidelines and idiosyncrasies related to transfers of DVC points:

  • Banked or Borrowed points may not be transferred.
  • Points received from another owner via transfer may be banked by the recipient.
  • During a single Use Year and owner may transfer or receive DVC points, but not both.  If an owner opts to transfer any number of points out of his contract during a single UY, he/she may not subsequently receive any amount of points from another owner during the same UY.  This rule is presumably designed to prevent members from bypassing the 11-month booking window by effectively trading points with another owner.  Note that there is no stated limit on the number of transactions that an owner can complete in a given year (i.e., an owner could receive points from one other owner or a dozen owners in a single UY, he just cannot transfer points out in the same UY.)
  • According to the Public Offering Statement, transferred points retain their own Home resort priority.  In other words, if Beach Club Villa points are transferred to an owner whose own contract is at Old Key West, the BCV points can be used to reserve a room at BCV within the 11 month window.  However, DVC’s computer system is unable to track these transactions properly.  When the BCV points are transferred to an OKW owner, they appear to be OKW points.  Using those points to book a room at BCV within the 11 month window will most likely require some persistence on the part of the member making the reservation, and a supervisory override by DVC to complete the booking.
  • Both parties must be current in their dues payments and have closed on their DVC contract in order to complete a transfer.
  • Transfers are final transactions—the points may not be returned to the transferring member.
  • The member transferring points is still liable for Annual Dues on transferred points.
  • According to DVC:  “Club Members are expressly prohibited from receiving compensation for engaging in any Transfer activity.”  Realistically, there are many people engaging in this very action with their DVC points.  We wouldn’t recommend mentioning any financial terms in conversations with DVC.  There is little DVC can do to truly investigate the nature of a transfer, and the enforceability of this clause is certainly open to debate.
  • Unofficially, DVC is much more lenient in applying transfer rules to two contracts owned by a single individual.  If a single owner has two different contracts with different home resorts and different Use Years, a transfer is required to combine points from those contracts for a single booking.  These transactions would technically be subject to all of the rules that apply to other transfers, but there are known situations where DVC has permitted transfers involving banked or borrowed points when the contracts have common ownership.
